Do you have much time outside of your cells? Is there really a lot of gay sex? Can you have the Internet in your cell? Can you be sent boxes of gifts? Do you have jobs and opportunities?

Please feel free to write anything you can. Am really interested for personal reasons.

mostly boring and stupid, following the orders of people not smart enough to be anything else but be guards. Amenities depend on the state. In Florida, there is a communal TV controlled by the staff. A personal radio is permitted. Most of the day is outside the cell, or outside the open bay dorms. Nothing can be sent in but money to the central bank for canteen purchases: snack foods, stamps paper envelopes and such. No personal clothes, uniforms provided. Sex acts prohibited but happen, if caught go to confinement for 30 days or more.

Having met several men/women with that sentence, it becomes the life that they know best. Some openly admit they would go back to crime if they were to get out, some wouldn't know how to deal. Prison is what they know. Depending on the state, some get out of their cells pretty often. Also, depending on the offender's sentence, how they behave in prison, if they have any violations from bad behavior all have something to do with the amount of time they have to wander around the wing. In Missouri, you cannot send a box of gifts to them. They can get a job in prison (again, depending on which state the prison is in). Yes, there really is gay sex there. To some, it really doesn't make a difference. To others, it's just a release... a fact of life. Again, depending on the state they are incarcerated in, they do not have and cannot have the internet. If you could be more specific and tell us which state, this question would be easier to answer. You can also check with the state's policy on inmates on what they can have/can't have. Another thing, since it is an LWOP sentence, I would assume the prison is a Level 5 for security. They are allowed a lot less for good reasons. I hope for your sake that you are not planning on entering into a romantic relationship with a man/woman with an LWOP sentence. These people were obviously convicted of something really bad. They are professional cons. I've met too many people that felt they had "reached" the heart of the person, only to find out somewhere down the road that they had been conned. And, it can be quite expensive. It's not all romance and fun. Never offer/volunteer or send money to them. They really and truly don't need it, unless you want to send stamps, or money for stamps. Do NOT start taking collect calls from them (which is the only way they can call). It will become a habit and it is also quite expensive. I've seen too many women/men go broke while the inmate lived much better.

My husband is in prison. He says that he gets up, go to chow, go back to his cell and read. If he chooses he could play cards or something with other inmates. Sometimes a person is given privileges such as to use the work out room.

You are not allowed Internet Access. You cannot receive anything other than a money order (if you are on the visitors list for some facilities), Letters and cards. No stickers things like that. Very simple and conservative. However, each facility is different.

Media likes to show a lot of gay sex, but it doesn't happen as often as they like to show it does. If you are caught masterbating, you get a disciplinary ticket for "self mutilation".

The amount of time outside your cell varies from facility, classification and housing units. Plus they consider how crowded the facility is.

To obtain medical and dental care, it is very difficult at times. The prison charges you for everything and families usually help supplement the costs. It costs 3$ for my husband to see the nurse and it costs a few dollars for Tylenol. If you don't have the money in canteen, you go without.

Education costs money to the inmate’s families as well. Currently he has been using the library and working on his GED. Phone calls also cost family members a LOT of money. Your phone bill could be anywhere between $20-100 a month, extra.

Sometimes you cannot take showers when you want to. You should always wear shower shoes when you take one (avoid athletes foot).

If the laundry room loses one of the shirts that is allotted to you, the family has to pay. Family also needs to pay for shoes for inmates, if not, they go without. You can get state issued shoes, but they give no support and they fall apart in a few months.

You are able to get visits and make phone calls, but these privileges are taken away for various reasons. If a person is on the phone and one inmate starts causing trouble, everyone has to lock down, you hang up and go!

Basically you sleep and eat. Your basic needs are met very minimally. It is not glamorous as the media likes to make it out to be. You cannot get a TV or a Radio, unless someone sends you money to pay for it. They have a TV in the day room, where inmates can play cards, write to family members, make phone calls, while they are out of their cells. Inmates should only be allowed to get the Disney channel or the Discovery Channel! I can't even afford cable. I feel they shouldn't have cable, but work on educational and vocational activities instead.

Prisons should be working on Transitional Programs to involved vocational goals. Too many times people get out with no skills and little support and go back to the way they were before. With transitional programs, it would help MORE people being released to be law abiding, productive members of society.

Obviously it's not hard enough...people who go tend to always go back.

We need to make our jails less like camp and more like PRISON!!.
