Civil is contrasted with criminal law at its most general, and includes a whole lot of things. Generally, civil law as a category in the courthouse means lawsuits. There are two basic types of lawyers there: those that represent plaintiffs, who normally work for a percentage of the award, and those that represent defendants for an hourly fee. The ones who represent defendants are often paid by the insurance company for the defendant. That's much of why you need automobile LIABILITY insurance.

But other things are civil law, too, less directly: the formation of corporations, partnerships and other business law transactions. You can call probate, trusts and estates and estate planning as civil law, too, although those seldom have to go to court for more than formalities. And you can call adoptions and divorces civil law too, if you want, although the term is usually Family Law.

Again; civil is the most general of all these terms. It is contrasted only with criminal law, which uses a whole different set of rules.
