I read that Guinea pigs are a type of rat which genetically grows longer hair. Someone used to call them hippie rats it said, but they are from Guinea so that name stuck. That means people are buying rats for their kids? Isn't that kind of, well , nasty?Aren't rats dirty?

Do u just go to the adoption center and they show you like dogs and cats in cages and you pick one and fill an adoption form thing and your done? Or is it a lot more complicated?

Well I got a bear hamster about 4 months ago from petco. I bought him because all of the other hamsters had been beating him up, he had cuts and his ear had a bite mark that went all the way through. He was okay in the store, very nice, so I bought him. When we got home, I tried to pick him up to put him in his new cage, and he bit me REALLY HARD. I mean like blood streaming down my finger hard. Of course, I thought it was simply because he was scared. So I put him in his cage. I held him the next day, and the next for about a week. Then, out of nowhere, when I was holding him, he bit me AGAIN. I didn't know what to think, so I ignored him and put him away. The same thing again about a month and a half later. I don't know what to make of it. Every single time though, its just on the very end of my fingertip, and blood all down my hand. Has anyone ever encountered this before? Any suggestions to make him stop biting me and be more social?

I wanted a hamster, but I can't have one. I already had an experience with turtles, that didn't turn out too great. And my dad says get a fish, but those are boring, and you don't do much with them. Got any ideas?

Did you have any food you had to throw away? Did your animal get sick? Do you know someone who was affected by it? We have fed our cats iams before, but thankfully everyone here is ok.

I am wondering if anyone has gotten a baby rat from a pet store and been able to tame them? If so how did you do it?--What are you feeding your rats?--My moms eats seeds like what we feed our sun conure--I know we can feed him cheerios but what else can we give them...any help would be appreciated---Have been wanting a pet rat for quite a while just not sure where to get them from

Has anyone trained theirs to wear a collar or harness and walk on a leash if so how?

Any other tips on raising rats would be appreciated--including breeding.

Thank you so much for your time-and for helping me with this question!

We think it might have mites but maybe not. In the meantime we have cleaned his cage and replaced his wood chips he lives in with LOTS of crumpled litte pieces of plain white paper. We thought the wood chips might be irritating or mites were in the wood chips. He is a new hamster and has been itching for two days non-stop. But now he seems to be chewing on the paper - maybe we made a bad decision?
