A single mom who's raising her son in a chaotic, turbulent and hostile environment, is concerned because her 9-year-old son has killed his pet hamster and tortures the family dog. Dr. Phil suggests she seek immediate help, and advises the following:

Stop the fighting. Fighting in front of children changes who they are. Your fighting writes on the child's slate in permanent ink, and you don't have the right to do it. Be mature enough to recognize that your behavior is affecting a defenseless child, who will have to pay the price.

It's not just the child who needs help, you need help to stop the fighting. Having insight and understanding the problem is not going to stop this, because the payoff from the fighting is too big. You cannot change what you don't acknowledge.

Recognize the severity of the situation. If you think killing a hamster and torturing a dog is where it's going to stop, you're wrong. A child harming or killing a family pet is a precursor to some very serious violent behavior. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty against animals don't stop there; many of them move on to their fellow humans. Children who harm family pets are at risk for other kinds of acting out behavior and need immediate help. What also goes along with torturing animals is setting fires. If you smell smoke, you'd better take it seriously.

Additional information from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals:

Studies show that acts of cruelty toward animals are the first signs of violent pathology that includes human victims.

Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser, but a symptom of a deep mental disturbance.

The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appear in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers.

Studies show that violent and aggressive criminals are more likely to have abused animals as children.

Domestic abuse is directed toward the powerless; animal abuse and child abuse often goes hand and hand.

Children who abuse animals most likely are repeating a lesson learned at home from their parents or guardians. They are reacting to anger or frustration with violence.

The child's violence is directed at the only individual in the family more vulnerable than themselves — an animal.

i own an albino teddy bear hamster. he seems terribly bored, and spends most of the day running. is there any way i can entertain him better? he likes to climb but i have a limited amount of space i can work with for adding tubes and that sort of thing.
secondly, since he really does enjoy his wheel, is there one out there that DOES NOT squeak? the one we bought said it wouldnt squeak, but it lied. we had to rig it up specially with tape to keep it from squeaking (dont worry, he doesnt chew on the tape) but the tape thing only lasts for a couple days tops before we have to replace the tape, so a no squeak wheel would be awsome. what type should i look for?
lastly, i want to give him treats more often, just so he has a little variety in his diet. we have the special food with all the vitamins, but he loves carrots, so i like to give him one now and then. but are apples safe? i cant find anything that says they are not safe, but i cant find anything that says they are

Okay..

We have 3 rabbits whom are kept seperate from each other. 1 doe, 2 bucks.
They all have their own cages. The doe has an appt in 2 weeks to be spayed, but I am not sure if this will happen now or not. I say this because..

My daughter and a friend thought it would be good for 2 of the rabbits to play together because they thought they were lonely.
The doe is just about 6 months of age. The 2 bucks are unknown because I adopted them so they would not be taken to the SPCA. I know they are older. My daughter says that the bunnies were together for about 3 minutes and then they took them out when they saw the bunnies were " mating ". We just brought the bucks home 2 days ago. They all have their own hutches. My question is this...can she get pregnant that fast? The other issue is that my doe is a floppy eared lop and the buck is a rex. They are not the same breed.

Can someone help me with some answers?
Thank you to everyone.

Hello: I have just brought home a new puppy, a german shepherd. He is 9 weeks old. How much time should I spend with him a day? Is it ok to have him outside for any period of the day? (The temperature is about 9 degrees, its March and spring in Canada) Does he have to be with me all day? He is whining quite a lot, its the second day we've had him, and he was crying all night it seemed;/ it was a hard night - I appreciate your advice, thanks.

Do dogs and cats that get spayed and neutered, Get their tubes tied for the procedure? I just don't see the point of removing anything from them and practically gutting the females when your animals can just get their tubes tied like humans so they won't have any puppies or kittens. Other than that you can control your animals that get railed up just like everyone else does and put diapers on the females that get their periods and if your annoyed enough, put diapers on the male cats that spray, LOL ;-).

I used to live in an apartment building, where 60% of the people had dogs or cats. One couple had two giant, rail thing greyhounds, they took for a 10 minute walk every day. When you get a pet, you are part of a market for the pet industrie. Same like ivory, for which elephants are brutally destroyed. Can owning a pet really be good for the pet?

ive had an extra florescent light -inside the protective cardboard- sitting on top of my aquarium. ... it's covering 2 of 3 openings to the aquarium.... i first noticed them 5 or 6 days ago searching for food, and once it was found- the excess fish food- over a period of a 2 days, they colonized the tube's cardboard.
i need to access the other two openings, but i dont want to really disturb the ants. their stay is welcomed--> they'll clean up all of the fish food and all........ so.................................. how can i move the tube without them freaking out and leaving?
if i DO move the tube, set it on the floor, and then put it back 2 hours later, will they re-situate themselves and continue their old routine, or will they abandon the tube? what should i do? i NEED to use the 2 other doors!
