I find rabbits seem happier when they have other rabbits. You can have them spayed or neutered, too. We've had 4 rabbits and the ones that lived with other rabbits seemed better adjusted and happier. They were friendly and playful.
Please don't keep your rabbit in the cage all of the time. It needs to get out for a few hours each day, it needs toys to play with (they enjoy those cat balls wtih bells in them for one thing) they need things to chew on, and they need a variety of healthful foods.
They can be trained to use a litter box like a cat, and you can then use the cage like you would use a crate for a dog, and keep him/her in there when you will be out of the house.

It is advisable, but I don't feel it's necessary. My rabbit is free roam and has constant stimulation/playtimes. He's happy and in perfect health. But if you plan on getting two, SPAY and NEUTER. Rabbits are the third most turned-in-to-shelter animals, so we really don't need anymore. Even if you don't plan on getting two... spay the female for health reasons. You don't really have to worry about the male unless there are behavioral problems.

Yes, it will be lonley. How about asking your friend for two, and tell her you'll pay her an amount of money for two of them. Keep in mind they need to be with their mother the first few weeks of life.
