I've got 2 females, and used to have 2 males.

It is extremely hard to keep them from stinking I'm afraid - I keep mine in the spare room! I clean them out thoroughly twice a week, but I'm afraid mice are just stinky little creatures. But they're lovely!

Right - bedding. Use soft shredded paper from pet shops for their little sleep houses (definitely provide at least one of these). As for the base of the cage/tank, just don't use sawdust, especially cedar or pine, it's bad for rodents. I use this stuff called 'safe bedding' from PetSmart, is't FAB.

Food - make sure you get proper mouse 'muesli', not hamster mix. All the rodents have different dietary requirements. There are also 'rat nuggets' available - these are good as they are a complete food and prevent a mouse picking the bits of food out that he likes and missing out on nutrients. I feed both types of food.

But by far the most essential piece of equipment for any rodent is a WHEEL! Preferably solid as they can get toes caught in ones with rungs.

Oh and the cage or tank - as big as you can afford! They say it should be a tank as mice can squeeze through small holes or get toes/tails caught in wire, but none of mine have ever had these problems- although a friend's rat skinned the end of his tail in a wire cage. Maybe go with a tank, but with lots of ladders and levels to climb on!

Hello I'm Ella B and I think you have asked the right person coz I have 2 female pet mice. I have found that if I put newspaper or wood shavings at the bottom of the cage the cage starts to smell after about 2 days. Lately though I have been putting kitty litter at the bottom of the cage and it absorbs the smell of the urine much better and I only need to change it once a week. I have also had male mice too and I have found that they smell much quicker than females. My mice have a mouse cage about $25, a toy mouse wheel about $5 and something to hide in a house about $7 (all Aussie dollars.) They are great little pets. I hope that you enjoy them.
Regards
Ella B

Clean the cage like once or twice a week. There's this mulch crap you can use to lay down in the fishtank/ cage or... cheaper yet just use newspaper and wrip it up for them. They like it. Buy this stuff called mite spray. Mice sometimes attract these things called mites. They're little red bugs that make them itch and stuff. The bugs aren't attracted to humans but your mice will pull out their hair and go nuts. You'll need the little water bottle thing and maybe a wheel. The wheel is pretty fun to watch them run in. That's about it. There's this mouse spray that cleans them too. I believe I washed my mouse once a week the same time I cleaned out the cage. THAT'S IT. If you're worried about smell buy Air Wick spray. That'll kill smells too. Good luck
