Rabbits in the wild are eaten by coyotes, hawks, owls, and even hunted by people. They are "prey" animals. There is a survival advanatage for such animals to be quiet.

Its the same reason why wild rabbits tend to be brown, or other colors that camouflage.

Loud rabbits that are easy to spot from a distance get caught and eaten--quiet, hidden ones do not.

They do make a sound sometimes when you are trying to get rabbits back into their cages if you corner them and they feel threatened they will grunt at you. Years ago I had one that would do that every so often when cornered. They are not mute.

Rabbits have a lot of sounds that they make and most of those sounds ARE communication -- so it IS speech !! They just don't "talk much" usually and especially if they are contented !!
