Okay, for school then. Yes, penicillin is used on both animals and humans alike. Also, it was tested on animals first; just like several other forms of medication.
So as far as animal testing goes, ask yourself this, "Would volunteer to take a shot of something which might work or might kill me" then be glad it went into that the little rat first.

Different animal species have their own responses and tolerances to drugs. So the safe dosage for a cat may be very different from the safe dosage for a dog or a human. For one particular species, the safe dosage of a drug may be too low to be effective. That makes that drug useless for that species. People (including medical doctors) accidentally kill their pets surprisingly often by giving them over the counter pain killers like aspirin or acetaminophen.
Penicillin is generally a very safe drug for every mammalian pet or food animal species. It is also safe for aquarium fish, reptiles, and birds. But that is not the case with other common antibiotics like streptomycin or tetracycline. All drugs (including those you buy without a prescription) should be authorized by your veterinarian before you give them to an animal. They spend years learning all about species-specific tolerance and adverse reactions.

The list of human medications used also for animals is HUGE. My dog, who has addisons disease like John F Kennedy, gets the same medication as JFK !
His aunt Shophie was on human heart medication in her old age, bought with a vet script at a human pharmacy.

Yes animals can take different antibiotics, as well as many other medications. My sisters dog was taking them for a skin disorder, which later found out it was caused by his thyroid so he now takes thyroid medication.
