I would not let him run around the room. Unless you watch him carefully. And I mean, CAREFULLY! Cause he can scamper away, and squeeze himself in the air vents, and, you will never see him again.

For a good alternative, you can buy him a new little home.

Try PetCo. Fore some new homes. Some of them are really cheap, but give your hamster a lot to do. Different tunnels to walk around in, and a wheel too!

Me personally, I do not like those cages, but some people swear by them. Hamsters, are natural tunnlers, and those cages half the time, are not deep enough for them to tunnel in.

I have a Fancy Dwarf hamster myself, and I keep him, (Name is Tips) in a 5 or 10 gallon (can't remember which) Fish Tank. And in there, I have his wheel, I bought the silent one, it makes, NO NOISE! http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?R=10402&Nav=1&N=0&Ntt=Wheels&cp=5&Nao=48&sku=989452&familyID=14888&

Called the silent spinner. I have the small for my Dwarf Hamster, perfect fit.

And along with that, I have random wooden things inside. Little homes, and different shaped things for him to make tunnels to each opening to every one. I have one plastic T.V. he can peek in and out of.

(But make sure the plastic is safe for animals to eat, cause hamsters chew on everything. Most suprisingly are not)

But if you want him to run around the room, if you have hardwood anywhere around your house, or a flat durface, buy an exercise ball. Or what I have for my hamster,

A CAR!
(well they do not have the car, so for a boy, a MOTORCYCLE!)

But really, everything on this website, is in the store clostest to you. I would hate for your hamster to run around, get caught into something, chew on some wires, or get lost down the air vent. I will -never- let my hamster walk around my room without him being in his ball or car.

Try going to a pet store and ask if they have a hamster ball. They are a small animal what if you let it loose and someone comes into your room and doesn't know it? It's better off in the cage with a screen or top on it considering that it sleeps during the day up at night. The ball is the safest thing and it will get the exercise it needs!
