Well, you do just like you said and then hand them around 60 to 100 bucks. It's not complicated.
Dogs adopted from an animal shelter usually are eternally grateful to their families. And it will give you such a good feeling knowing you saved the dog's live. :)
Your dog will come already spayed/neutered and will have all it's immunizations and no internal or external parasites. You should be guaranteed a healthy dog.

There are several shelters that animals can be adopted from near where I live. I went to the SPCA and adopted two spayed female cats. The shelter is a no kill one and they had a two for one special which was $40. I had to fill out a form and provide a reference. There was a waiting period of a week because I had an unneutered male cat. The shelter neutered him and gave him a rabies shot for free, but I made an extra donation. They did request an in home visit after the adoption, but this did not happen. Another shelter requires an in home visit before the adoption and another afterward. I'm pretty sure they also request a donation. The best way to adopt is to call first and find out the policy of the shelter.

Not too hard. Go to local spca, humane society, etc. and find the dog/cat you want. Fill out a few forms, show proof of ID---also proof of ownership (mortgage) or lease (apartment renters) showing you can have animals there.
Costs range, but usually $40 -$50. Spca includes spaying and all of that in the cost.
Good luck and have fun potty training.
you can also check your local paper for dogs/cats

Go to Petfinder.com. Adoptable pets are pictured in your location. Just enter your zip code. We could have gone to a pet store and spent $1000 on a dog, but in memory of our beloved scottie, we adopted a wonderful dog who needed a good home through that website. It cost us $130.

Thank you for considering adopting a pet! There are so many wonderful animals waiting in shelters. So what if they're not "purebred" or "AKC" or any of that! Two of my cats are adopted, and I literally plucked one cat and my dog off the side of the road where they had been abandoned myself. They are utterly, utterly loyal to me. I love all my "mutts"!

In most cases that's pretty much it. You do have to pay an adoption fee. Some rescue organizations actually come to your home and check out your place, and check you out, to see if you would make a good pet owner.

If you want a dog, just tie a steak around your neck and sit on the corner. For a cat, try a slab of tuna.
Strays will come from everywhere with this method. :o)

That's it. The adoption fee varies and you promise to have the animal neutered/spayed. Have a long and loving life with your new best friend.
