I breed hamsters, so i can probrably answer this question.
if the hammie does not have its eyes open, do not touch it. the day it opens its eyes, you can pet it and pick it up but you must pet the mother as well and all others in the litter.
if you just got it and it is not with its mother, try holding it in your hands very gently and brushing it and stroking it with your finger tips. don't press too hard or you may hurt it.

depeding on how old this baby hamster is, you should pet it with your fingers. if it is still pink, do not try to touch it. it's mother will defend her young. if it is old enough to be away from it's mother, stroke it softly along its back until it gets used to it. if you are trying to get the hamster to be used to human contact, try feeding it a piece of its food from your hand, and when it gets used to your hand being near it, graduallly pick it up and be sure to handle it every day for a week or so until it is completely used to you.

What I first got my hamster I had the same question too. I found out that if you wore gloves, You couldn'e feel her biting you. Eventually she will find out that bitiong you is of no use and will stop. ( be very gentle with the hamster!) Pet her sofly on the back.

if the babies are with the mother, you should not touch them unless its a life or death situation. If you pick them up and then put them back in the cage, I can assure you that the mother will eat it.
