i already have a five gallon hex aquarium that i got from walmart where i work. i was talking to another employee and he was enthused about my new hobby, so he gave me his 55 gallon aquarium (free) :) im looking for a bunch of different fish to put in there. so far ive been thinking some glow light tetras, khuli loaches and some ghost shrimp but i wanted to be assured of their compatibility so basically im open for any suggestions i did a bunch of googling and got tired of searching for answers.

the reason im so concerned and all is because i have two dwarf gouramis in the five gallon and i dont want all my fish fighting especially not my betta. so far the gouramis have left gillis alone and he chases them around the tank when they get too close but so far minimal nipping. also any cool plants to add to this new tank would be nice. hope all that made sense lol. thanks in advance.

My discus tank has just become infected with ich after introducing a new fish. I'm treating it but I'd like to completely prevent this from happening again.
Would adding a UV sterilizer to the tank accomplish this? Are there any negative effects associated with it? I don't know much about them, but I thought it kills all the bacteria. I have a Fluval filter with bioballs in it, so the UV shouldn't kill any of the bacteria that is living in there, right?

I really like the freshwater tanks that have all the plants and neat looking moss. Is there any type of moss that you can grow w/o going out and buying it?

I have had him for awhile and he has made the trip home from college a few times and he always did well. All the other fish are not acting different except for him. He is always at the top of the tank (like they should be), but now he's on the bottom. He's really black, which is the color he usually turns when he is hungry, but he won't eat. He really has never sat on the bottom of the tank. Also it seems like some of his back tail is missing??? He has been in the tank with the same fish for awhile and nothing bad has happened. If you want a list of the fish in the tank just ask. I'm really concerned, because he is acting completely abnormal.... Here are 2 pictures of what he used to look like.

Me and two other friends went to Petsmart yesterday, all 14 years old, to buy some feeder fish, just to have, not to feed them to other fish. We were at the counter and the clerk and the person that put the fish in the bags didnt say anything about you have to be 18 years or older to buy feeder fish. But then the manager took them away from us saying you have to be 18 years of age or older to buy them.

So, do you really have to be 18,
or did that manager just not trust us?

I thought i was a good pet parent but beginning to question myself.
A week ago we bought 6 beautiful neon tetras from a dodgy tank (with dead fish--i know)
3 died on Monday but the others seemed fine. The water showed v low readings of am. and nitrite, only nitrate was a tiny bit high. To make sure the remaining three weren't lonely my housemate went to buy 6 more (and two male guppies) today, but he came back with 6 cardinal tetras and three of them have only one eye. Worst, while he was gone, two of the other tetras died and the third has white spots on head and tail. (NTD? Ick?)
argh. So a) do i have to euthanise the last NT? b) are the one eyed cardinal tetras actually ok? Is it a disease or a GM problem? c) when is it safe to release them in the tank? I heard that all fish can catch NTD.
BTW the male guppies are already fighting for space in the bag and the shop is closed and we don't have a quarantine tank.
(when i was a kid keeping fish really seemed easy)

I have a pond in my back yard (one of those lagoon type from garden store) where my goldfish (11) are kept during the spring and summer months... I was wondering if they will breed and have babies without any help from me, or if I should do anything to the pond to encourage breeding etc. Also when are goldfish full grown... or do they keep growing for life?

When I cycle and or do a partial water change, can I add tap water directly to the tank and then dechlorinate the water for the amount I put in? Would the chlorine/chlorimides harm the bacteria and or fish to the point where my tank gets messed up? or is it okay?

I have had a violet goby (in freshwater) for over a year now. I'm worried that if I try to convert the tank to brackish water, I might do it too quickly and kill everything in the tank. I also don't know if my guppies (normal, not fancy) can live in brackish. I've been all over the internet looking for answers but there are so many sites that contradict one another. And besides all that, I have a silver dollar and he could use more room. (The violet goby's tank is bigger.) I'd love to hear from anyone who has kept violet gobies in freshwater successfully or has had problems because of freshwater conditions. Thanks.

Hi all, I have a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium and I'm using play sand as my substrate. I've had it for a few months now and I keep seeing black patches of sand turning up in the lower layers of the sand bed. I went online and found out that you're supposed to churn the sand every 8 - 16 weeks. But I've been having to churn my sand at least once a week because the black patches keep reappearing. I try not to overfeed my fish but when I do I always make sure to scoop out any uneaten food. I do water changes every couple of days. Any ideas on how I can keep my sand from turning black so quickly? Or what could be causing this? Thanks!

I know a glow fish is a type of zebra fish. So is a Zebrafish and Dinano the same too?

Are glow fish and my 3 female bleeding heart tetras compatible together in a 10g? I am planning on getting most likely one more bleeding heart.

If I do get glowfish should I get the 4 since I wll have 4 tetras or does it not matter if the number in the schools the same?

I don't know much about snails but I wanted to know if a Green Terror would tolerate one and if having one would even be worth while.

My set up is 30 gallons, my Green Terror is the only occupant and he is rather young being about 3.5 inches. I have no plans to add another fish, this is purely about a snail(s).

This is incredibly broad btw, so if you have specific snails to recommend then please do so. Thanks in advance.
