very simple
do a partial waterchange of 25% with a gravelsiphon and refill with conditioned water
2 days later take a cup or a scooper which you use for catlitter (needs to be bought newly however) and scoop out about half of the gravel on one site
The new gravel should be rinsed in warm water in a strainer
take a cup, put gravel in it and submerse it slowly into your tank and then pour it out
repeat until you have added the same amount of gravel you have taken out
let it sit for a day and do the same routing on the other half of the tank

DO NOT take out your fish when doing this

Also, there is no reason not to do it, since 90% of the main bacteria is in your filter media anyway

hope that helps
Good luck

Vacuum the gravel really well and then scoop it out. You can always remove your fish to a smaller tank for an hour or so while you do this. Save the water to replace when you're done and you should be fine with enough bacteria to keep your tank cycled.

You could, but I wouldn't. There is SO much good bacteria in your rock. Unless you are starting completely over with new fish, I wouldn't do it. You will likely lose most of your fish. I work in a pet store and cannot tell you how many people have come in a reported they killed their entire fish population that way.

You can, but it's not recommended. I would use a gravel vacuum and clean out the rocks that way.

i wouldnt reccomend it if you have fish in the tank. even if you get out the gravel, when you add the new stuff, you'd be raining death on any of the tanks inhabitants. they can dodge a small bit, but not if its falling all over the tank. theyd be crushed.
