Yeah, I'm doing that fishless cycling.
No fish in there now, I'm guessing there wont be for a while....

Doing my homework before I get any fish

I wouldn't put more then 4 guppies or 4 platies in there or 2 guppies and 2 platies, but they should all be males or you will have your tank overcrowded in no time because they both breed like crazy
Even if you would get females from the store, 90% of them are always already pregnant when you buy them
however you could add also a couple of mystery snails to this setup

Hope that helps
Good luck

5 gallon tank isn't big at all and you are going through a cycle period so I suggest having only 2-3 guppies or platies in for now. They are excellent source for cycling. Mollies or zebra danios are good too. I personally like mollies a lot cos they are fun and cute to look at :)
But definitely no more than 3 during cycling period. Then it's like a mass massacre due to high ammonia.

I want to suggest you a fishless cycling method though. This is completely an inhumane way to cycle a fish tank. You can find more info online.

get male guppies/platies cause 99% of the time the females come already prego. if you get females then try not to get the plump ones cause that means they are full of eggs and will have babies very soon. also with 5 live plants.. 5 gallons isnt really enough... just get like 3 guppies and 2 platies. or something like that. i wouldn't put more than one fish per gallon... considering you have 5 live plants. but the live plants are very good. actually, instead of having platies and guppies i would go for cory cats and guppies. like 3 cats and 6 guppies. or 3 cats and 5 platies. or 2 cats, 2 platies, 3 guppies, or........ =]
