I have had him for awhile and he has made the trip home from college a few times and he always did well. All the other fish are not acting different except for him. He is always at the top of the tank (like they should be), but now he's on the bottom. He's really black, which is the color he usually turns when he is hungry, but he won't eat. He really has never sat on the bottom of the tank. Also it seems like some of his back tail is missing??? He has been in the tank with the same fish for awhile and nothing bad has happened. If you want a list of the fish in the tank just ask. I'm really concerned, because he is acting completely abnormal.... Here are 2 pictures of what he used to look like.

I'm not sure if someone ate the end of his tail, but i highly doubt it. Also those pictures were taken before he got sick. It was to show how different he used to look compared to how I described him now as black and on the bottom of the tank instead of the top...

Darkening color, lethargy, loss of appetite, and split fins can all be signs of poor water quality. Have you tested your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? Also, if you're behind in water changes, this can cause the pH to drop.

This might especially be true if you're bringing the fish home to an aquarium that hasn't been used for a while (rather than transporting both aquarium and fish) or contains substantially fewer fish. This can also happen if you are moving the entire tank and allow the gravel to be outside water for a period of time. If there isn't a constant source of ammonia and oxygenated water, the bacteria that convert the toxins from the wastes can't survive for lack of "food", moisture, or oxygen, or you may simply not have enough bacteria in a tank with fewer fish to handle all the new input of wastes.

Has there been anything added to the tank? (new rocks, decorations, etc.) may have had something on them that's affecting the fish. Since chemicals may be heavier or lighter than water, this may be something that's accumulated closer to the top of the tank, or something he might be more sensitive to than the other fish.

It might help if we had a list of all the fish in the tank, and the size of the tank to know if there's another fish picking on him.

Those photos are too close making the image blury

But I think you should call your vet.

I haven't own these type of fish before how long did you have if for? Most pet fish would die 3-4 years. Mine died 1 week ago.

Because you have put in what he normally does and what he doesn't do, I think that he may go away. I'm sorry

Did one of the other fish eat his tail?
