Why do you need a 20 gallon tank for a state fair goldfish?

Most fish given as prizes at fairs are common goldfish. These fish actually need 50 gallons (MINIMUM) of water which translates to a 55 gallon tank (gravel, decorations and other items take up space). Each additional single-tail goldfish requires an additional 50 gallons of water which means a very large tank.

Common goldfish are single tail goldfish and are essentially the "super athletes" of the goldfish family. Single tail goldfish are very strong swimmers and often exceed 18 inches in length. For this reason, they are really best suited for outdoor ponds, but can be kept indoors in large tanks. A 55 gallon tank is the bare minimum size I would recommend, however, a larger tank (100g+) would be much better.

There are over 300 varieties of goldfish but they can be sorted into 3 groups:

Group 1: Single tailed, sleek bodied (Commons, comets, shubunkin (feeder goldfish are typically commons)

Group 2: Rounded or egg shaped double-tailed fancies such as Oranda, Ryukin, Black Moor and other Demekin, Fantails.

Group 3: Fancies requiring special handling due to a lack of a dorsal fin, lack of a tail, exaggerated features or unusual appendages. Sometimes you will find combinations of these oddities on the same fish. Ranchu, Lionheads, Bubble-Eyes, Pom Pons, Pearlscales, Meteors and Marigolds are examples.

Simply put, state fairs give out single tail common goldfish because they can be purchased in bulk for about 2 cents per fish. In my opinion, giving away any living creature as a fair prize should illegal as it is simply inhumane as no consideration is given for the welfare of the poor fish.

That's ridiculous! You don't need a 20 gallon tank for a fair Goldfish!!! Start at 55 gallons and work your way up as they grow! Fair Goldfish (as their name implies) are just normal feeder Goldfish (which are the weakest, most mass-produced, pathetic, diseased fish your pocket change can buy) that come from the fair. As all Common/Comet Goldfish do, fair Goldfish will reach nearly 2 feet in length. Keeping large fish in small environments leads to stunting, which prevents the fish from reaching its full size, and, in the process, kills them through muscle, organ, and bone deformation. If you want an easy to keep pet, try a Chia Pet... just add water... Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!

State Fair Goldfish = Feeder Goldfish. Feeders are messy eaters, produce plenty of waste and can grow rather large.

Contrary to popular opinion they don't like being in tiny bowls that hardly allow them to swim around.

My feeder was alone in a 20 gallon tank for a long time, his whole life actually. He was gorgeous with long flowing fins and lovely colors.

No one believed that he was just a simple feeder.

You don't. Fair goldfish are just common goldfish. You need to allow about 2 gallons of water per inch of goldfish so if you have one of those little ones that you get from a fair you would be able to keep it in a 5 to 10 gallon tank for a bit. They will grow large but it isn't a quick process and most fish owners tire of them or they die from neglect long before they get to be 2 ft long.

fair gold fish are normally comet goldfish, the cheap feeder fish you see in stores sold at 10 for a dollar, I did see one fair that had fan tails. The way you can tell is the fan tail will hae a two tails both with two lobs the tail split down the middle, the comet only one with two lobs. Comets are dirty fish that can get to over 2 foot long, fantails when left in large ponds can get to two pounds and a foot with a long tail, otherwise most stay 6 to 8 inches with the very long tail. Fantails are meant for a household tank, while comets are for outdoor ponds, faintails can live outdoors.
