It had a clean tank, and food. Its water was fine too. But today i found it dead! I've had it for a little over a year, but i don't know how old it was when i got it. it seemed kinda sick this past month, but that has happened before, and it was ok. Sniff, sniff..i really liked that fish.

Your question begs more information...how did it seem sick? did it hang out at the top of the tank? if it did, did it keep it's mouth out of the water?
did it just lie at the bottom of the tank? not move around much? did it's scales stand out from it's body? did it look bloated or was it real thin?
if you answered yes to the first 3 questions, it could have got stuff in it's gills & had trouble breathing.
if you answered yes to any of the last 4 questions...it had a parasite or disease.

Bettas stocked in stores are usually 9-12 months old. The average lifespan of a betta is 4-6 years with optimum care (though some are on record living as long as 14 years in a laboratory setting). Unfortunately, bettas are usually given the bare minimum in terms of care and housing (being put in deli cups and displayed on shelves where the water temperature never reaches an adequate level of warmth, for instance).

It would help to know what you mean by "kinda sick", as someone said earlier. It could have been that it became sick and couldn't fight off an infection. Did you medicate him at all during that time?

I am sorry. I have a betta. Could something in the outside enviroment change? My friend's betta died and it was because the kitchen was being redone and the fumes got into the tank. The fish could have just gotten old or sick.

That's funny.... not that he died but my son had one and his name was Sniffy......lol we cleaned the tank too much is what I was told, they live in muddy nasty environments and we keep them too clean and they die. My friend never cleans her tank and she's had her fish for 5yrs.

Usually, it can only live for one year.
No matter how good the condition that it was living, it was ready to move on.
If you really loved it, i bet it reeeeeeeally loved you too.
