Me and two other friends went to Petsmart yesterday, all 14 years old, to buy some feeder fish, just to have, not to feed them to other fish. We were at the counter and the clerk and the person that put the fish in the bags didnt say anything about you have to be 18 years or older to buy feeder fish. But then the manager took them away from us saying you have to be 18 years of age or older to buy them.
So, do you really have to be 18,
or did that manager just not trust us?

Many stores have a policy where you must be a certain age (16 years in some places, 18 in others) to purchase live animals. The manager wasn't taking them away because he didn't trust you, it was a store policy that he was enforcing.

umm i've been buying fish for so many years under the age of 18 they rpobably didnt trust a huge group of teenagers walking and buying a bag of fish that could look bad but if you were there with yourself or with a parent and you bought them they would be just fine so just go back with a parent or older individual

It's store policy that you're 16+ (18+ in some places) in order to purchase live animals. It's best to have your parents with you, in order to show that you have their permission.
I've purchased quite a few pets before I was 18, but I was also well known by the staff, so they knew that I was allowed.

I hope I can help.
I own a pet shop and in the license it states that I am not permitted to sell livestock to anyone under the age of 16 years.
However, it is also included in the license that I am allowed to sell to them at my discretion to anyone under that age who shows sufficient knowledge about the care of that particular species.
I would say anything less than 12 years is automatically a no-no.
The line about discretion is the most important.
Personally, my policy is not to sell to ANYONE under the age of 16 without their parents or guardians being present, and if it is someone older than that, I usually question them about their knowledge of caring for that particular species.
If I have any doubt, I do not sell to anyone.. I always advise to seek knowledge or read about the animals first.
Sometimes other pet shops sell to anyone.. those are the shops not to trust, they just want your money.
I hope this helps

dont even bother with petsmart in the first place. feeder fish are so abused there that you would be lucky if they lived, even if they arent prey. anyway, goldfish get to be about a foot when ample tanksapce is provided.
