Fish - May 2007

Hi, I have a mixed tropical tank with mollys, platys, tetras, a plec and a fancy goldfish (I know he shouldnt really be in there but he has been for a year and has been fine) I have been on holiday for the last week and came back last night to a cloudy tank and fish with poo's hanging out of their bums. I have checked the food and they seem to have been fed an awful lot! I tested the water, Ammonia fine, Nitrite & nitrate up, PH off, so have changed some of the water and put some PH adjuster in. The water is now clear again. How long should I wait before feeding the fish, they were last fed about 48 hours ago. A couple of the platys still have trails of poo. I have spoken to the person who was supposed to be looking after them, he had been left with instructions to feed them a tiny amount every day, but it seems his idea of tiny is very different to mine!

ive heard that you can feed your guppy fry egg yolk. i have had my guppy fry since mondy wen the female guppy gave birth to them.

i have hard boildan eg and taken the shell off an d placed it into a container.
what else do i have to do?
do i just feed them the actuall egg yolk wen it is in chunks?

is there any special way to feed them egg yolk?
i do not understand.

I want to keep my sand in the tank, but i don't know how i can constantly clean it. My honey took me about underfloor filter or something like that. But then i'll have to lose my sand. I built to rock shire and i have a big castle ordiment and those big pearl getting clam shell. I also have plants. I new at this hobby of fish. But i want pretty fishies. They all swim in a 55gal tank. I now only have a mature male electric blue, kid mayan cichlid, kid acei, baby acei, mature electric yellow, two inmature sunshine peacock, inmature jack dempsey and jewel, 2 small southamerican bumble bee catfishs, a medium pleco, two ivory snails, 2 stripped rachael catfishs, and that is it. It now being run by a fluvo filter, for i think 60 gal and now i just bought a whisper filter for 30-60gal.

help i want the fish to live but i want the sand too to be in there. what can i do to keep both?

who has had cichlid with sand before tell me?

I found a lovely white quartz stone in the Cambrian mountains. On one side where it's very crevassey there's a kind of orange soil with gold glitter in. I've boiled the stone for 10 minutes. I've given it a good scrub with a suede brush and got most of the soil off but it's going to be impossible to get it all out of the crevasses and it's proving to be not soluable, unless I scrape it with the point of a sharp knife. Will it be safe for me to put this stone into a tropical fish tank? Will it change the Ph of the water?

ok my fish tank has a air pump, undergravel filter system and a air tubing with the air diffuser but the stone broke will this be ok to still keep my fish in until I can get a stone for the tubing it has the under gravel filter system and the little black thing that held the stone still makes bubbles... that thing that fets in the tubing

i have a clownfish in a newly set up 29 gal tank w/ plenty of rock and the salinity is right but he will swim underneath the filter a lot, unless he comes out to eat...any ideas???

I was always under the impression that driftwood lowered ph, but my aquariums ph is MUCH higher than my tapwater. I don't like adding those ph adjusters as I can never seem to acheive a constant ph which is even more detremental.I have two large pieces of wood in my tank so why is the ph so high?

So I have a ten gallon tank, and I have a new 40 gallon. Im going ot fill it up, put the established media from the ten in the back of the hob filter onthe 40 gal. Im also gonna put some pantyhose filled with established gravel in, most of the gravel from the ten. So im gonna do fishless cycle, probably just like using a piece of shrimp or something. 2 questions, how ong do I leave the shrimp in and when should my levels reach the point where I can add two swordtails?

This isn't my first cichlid tank. I let my tank dry out when i moved and then i set it back up. i added some crushed coral to the tank, ph is 8, temp is 76, no ammonia, no nitrites or nitrates, i bought 4 malawis from Superpetz in annandale that looked fine, and now two days later they are lathargic and kind of rest on the bottom of the tank. I know that's not normal. What can it be?? The only thing I could think of is that the crushed coral has too much salt?? I rinsed it for 3 days?? Any help???

What kind of glue can I use to build my fish little shelters out of terra cotta pot shards? I need it to be waterproof, of course, and non-toxic once it dries. I do have a hot glue gun if that is an option. . . .

my dad maintains marine aquarims and dealing with salt water he needs feeder fish for some of his puffers and triggers. feeder fish are like small sick goldfish that you can buy at like petco or petsmart or any pet store with fish. They are bred spacificly for feeding other fish, i know, its horrible. my dad has a small tank in our basement that he keeps his feeder fish in and i love to go and look at them. most of the time i try to get away with taking some of them and puting some in my beta bowl in my room. a few months ago i got 5 fish from the tank and he didn't notice. i have had one of the five fish for a very long time now, like two months, and considering they are sick and most of them have ick or some disease, that is a very long time for a feeder fish. just yesterday i put in two new and very healthy looking feeder fish and they are doing fine. the bigger new fish is so mean though. it acts like its in charge and won't let the other fish eat. what should i do?

I have three guppies, all of which I THINK are male.

Gh 25
Kh 4
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
Ammonia 0.15

The tank is in the process of cycling.

I feed them as much Spirulina flake as they can eat in 40 seconds in the morning, and a few freeze-dried bloodworms at night.
Two of the guppies are fine, and haven’t put on any weight.

But the third has developed a HUGE round belly. The last two days, it’s also been hiding in the tank’s castel, or in behind the heater. (I've just found a pic of the fish from last week, and the belly is nearly 5mm bigger.)

Is it possible that the fish is constipated, or that I was sold a female and it’s now pregnant?
Or is it suffering the ill effects of cycling?

About 3 weeks ago, one of my female mollies gave birth to around 40 fry. Now, i have about 6 left. They are around 1cm in length. When can they go into the main tank?

I already have my tank set up. I`m just not sure what fish to go with... I like cichlids and catfish. But I don`t know what will outgrow the fish tank and what fish will not get along with each other. Suggestions Please. Thanks!

I cleaned my fish tank tonight, cleaned out the rock and everything. before i put my fish back in the tank i checked the water temp. it was at 70 degrees. my fish were all hudled at the top of the tank. then they started floating upside down. and had started to die. So i put them in some other room temp water,thinking this might help. they are still continuing to die. What have i done??
