He is in a 2.5 gallon hex tank on my desk at work. I was thinking maybe a mini-frog, snail, crab, etc., but I'm not sure what my fish wouldn't pick on. Any Ideas?

He looks like this guy here: http://image07.webshots.com/7/8/43/42/183984342HLYkVq_fs.jpg

I don't want something that will rip my betta's fins either.

A snail or a few freshwater shrimp would both be excellent choices. Personally I like the shrimp, they just are more fun to watch.

In a small tank like that I would just use Ghost Shrimp, they are fun to watch and if the betta eats them well thats what they are for anyway.

Also you can try wild(feeder) guppies, they are amusing. I use them to test my bettas fish agression before adding any fish to thier tanks.

If you upgrade to a 5g tank theres a great many fun schooling fish you can add into it. Betta Safe fish include Rasboras, Danios, Black Neon Tetras, Guppies(not too fancy), Corys, sometimes Ghost Shrimp and other fresh water shrimp. Also a nice Nerite snail for algae control. All the fish should be kept in groups of 3-5 or more depending on the size of your tank. As always watch your betta, some are agressive to other fish, most are not agressive at all to other fish.

A snail, like a mystery snail would be good. Your betta will eat shrimp (they love them) and a crab would be inclined to nip the fins. A 2.5 gal is too small for a frog and betta together. A cory cat would be another idea but you would need to watch you water perameters and make sure not to over feed the tank. Good luck!

a snail would work, I wouldn't recommend anything else. another fish would get killed, a crab would climb out, and even the tiny tiny frogs are a little big to be in a 2.5 gallon with another fish

you certainly can no longer save them jointly. The minimum TANK length for one betta is a 5 gallon with a heater/clear out. each and every fish needs a 5 gallon tank of it is very own with a heater and clear out. No fish can stay to tell the tale in a bowl for extremely long. they are wrong for protecting fish.

The best additions are ghost or cherry shrimp and snails. The shrimp are fun to watch (just be sure to have a hiding place for them) and they clean up the algae, etc.

Cherry shrimp, a snail or an African dwarf frog. No crabs though.

You can always get a female betta. they will not fight, maybe mate. They also get along with most other fish, and what you really have to watch out for is the fish that harass Bettas. Bettas are slow moving fish with very long fins, so they can't be kept with any quick fish that have a reputation of fin-nipping, like zebra danios. They get along *great* with most variety of tetras such as small neon tetras or some of the common livebearers. NO GOLDFISHES

Betas in general (no matter whether male or female) they are going to pick on the other fish.. It really isn't a good idea to get any fish to go with a beta, except for another beta. But they will pick on each other too. I don't remember if you have to get one of the same sex in order for them not to pick on each other or one of the opposite sex. You can go to Wal-mart (or any other place that sells them) they should be able to tell you what to do. But betas are generally better left alone.
