There is something black and fuzzy growing on everything that sits still in my fish tank. It does not grow on the fish. I tried scrubbing the caves and wiping the live plants off with no success. Any ideas on what it is and how to get rid of it? (I have a well established 30 gallon tank.)

I have a freshwater tank and was told seashells in the tank would raise my ph and needed to be removed. I took out the big shells but my rocks have a lot of tiny shells mixed in and I will have to just remove it all. I saw some really pretty rock call jerusalem stone. Does anyone know if that will work? Or is it ok that I just took out the large shells and use the rock I have?

I've become friendly with my local fish store. Nice people, but not so good with English.
The back is kind of like the front. A mixture of 10, 20 high, 20 long and 29 gallon tanks. They all are filtered by box filters with several running off of one pump. There were probably 50 tanks in the back and another 50 in the front.
They explained to me that most live bearers were raised on the premises. So were some egg layers. All fish they received went through a 4 day quarantine. Others well held longer to grow up. They told me several relatives and friends within 1,000 miles of here were also in this business and some had swimming pools of fish, that they purchased from. Definitely not the same sources or methods as Wal-Mart, Petco or Petsmart.
He told me this was the "old way" and this guaranteed better fish for me, the customer. Do you think this is true? Do you think most independents really are different than chains? Thanks.

I did some research and I found out that rosy red minnows arent supposed to have heat in their water...is this true?

if so, what should the temperature be? 65?

i went to petsmart today and it said 65-75 but some other sites said 50-70.

I live in a house built in the late 80's. Ive always lived in a 1 level house with my aquarium set up. We are renting. I have a 55 gal. acrylic with stand. The water weight alone will be 458 lbs. plus the stand, sand, tank and equipt.

1) Will the weight damage the carpet (put a piece of wood under?)
2) Location in the house is above a garage next to wall support. Will the floor supports hold it.

Now that many of our freshwater tropicals are able to be bred commercially on farms or by dedicated fish breeders, how important are the water parameters such as pH and hardness to these captive bred fish? For example, discus need a lower pH and alkalinity than say that of African cichlids, where the opposite is true. Having talked to several fish people in my home area, which unfortunately is not very many in SE Missouri, the reaction is mixed. My water is very hard and has quite a high pH (around 8-8.2 straight out of the well), but my tetras (Hemigrammus ocellifer, Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma, Paracheirodon innesi)(all in italics of course, darn formatting here....lol) seem to be doing very well. What are the thoughts of others here? Are commercially raised fish able to withstand larger water differences than that of their wild counterparts?

My new molly fish recently gave birth to around 15 babies. They are all in a separate baby tank thing that sits in the main tank and lets water circulate. Over the past few days, since they were born, around one or two babies have died each day. Today, four babies have died already.
We had only had the mollies for two days when it gave birth. Since then, three other fish in the tank have died: one siamese fighting fish and two guppies.
Please help me as I don't know what is happening!
Thanks
Tom

I'm going to get a few polka dot loaches and I was going to put grit down instead of the gravel for them. Is this necessary? Will it be ok to grow aquarium plants in? I haven't got an under gravel filter.

50 gallons because I don't want to have to upgrade as my fish get larger. Also, I really need a system or specific advice on how to filter, aerate, condition water, etc.

I was hoping there is an acrylic set-up available, but can't find one that is a system.

Thanks for your help.

I'm getting a fishtank today and I haven't had one of these in about ten years, let alone this big. I can't quite remember. Don't you have to set up the tank with everything including water and filter and let it run and sit for about 24 hours before adding any fish?

I am worried about amonia poison in my fish. I dont have a test kit so im not sure. Here are the details I have a 15 gallon tank with 4 neons and 1 betta and one dwarf frog. The bettas and frog are ok its life as usual for them.

Im worried about the neons though - they seem a little red by the gills and seem to be opening and closing their mouths (im worried it may be gulping for air.) They are still swimming around and active - and they are still ating - maybe a little less then before but they still charge the food when they see it. Is it possible im over reacting?

The tanks is about 5 weeks old now and i have been doing water changes every 3-4 days of about 10-15% with a gravel vacume. Is this possibly slowing down the cycle?? I also changed the carbon in the filter and rinsed the filter in the tank water i drained could this have had an effect? Is there anything i can do to help - im going to do another 15% change today? Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.
