I'm going to get a few polka dot loaches and I was going to put grit down instead of the gravel for them. Is this necessary? Will it be ok to grow aquarium plants in? I haven't got an under gravel filter.

I would advise against it on the basis that it's difficult to know the composition of the grit or what chemicals if any were used in it's manufacture and packaging. Some chemicals would of course be very harmful to your tank, even thosse beneficial to terrestrial plants. Try aquarium sand or fine gravel, your loaches and plants will be much happier most likely.

yes it will be fine, i wouldn't get plants though, they are a pain to maintain. they also tend to have snail eggs attached to them, that shouldnt be too much of a problem since most loaches will eat snails, you wont really have a problem.

edit: just make sure that there is no fertilizer or other additives to the grit, and have your water tested about a week after you set up the tank to make sure that all the levels are safe.

minimum high quality soil intensity for a care-unfastened backyard is 4 inches. For deeper root penetration 6 inches. Deep roots will make the backyard greater drought resistant, a greater helpful water and nutrient person and greater dense as new grass plant shoots emerge. till finally the clay soil to a minimum of a intensity of two inches, then upload topsoil to construct as much as 4 or 6 inches. this might alleviate subsoil compaction and enable a bonding of the topsoil to the subsoil (clay) and advance root penetration and water flow. The topsoil must be a loamy sand, sandy loam, clay loam, loam, silt loam, sandy clay loam or different soil applicable for the section. To the quantity accessible, useful, low-value and available, incorporate humus (totally decomposed organic and organic rely) into the topsoil. With this degree of soil preparation, the backyard would be appealing and require much less maintenance.
