what is the longest a pleco has ever lived not the average lifespan, well id like to know that too, but the oldest one has ever made it?

I don't think that any one has done this research,but it would be interesting to study.Pleco's in the wild have few natural enemies, and a built in food supply,so I'd expect a long lifespan. The oldest pleco in my aquaria is a Panaque Suttoni,he(?) was a fairly large fish when I acquired him,and that was in 1990,so I'd guess he's over 20 years old. I'm not sure how a researcher would go about studying the age of these fish in the wild, but it would certainly be fun to try. Hope this gets you closer to an answer.----Good luck.-----PeeTee

I have heard horror stories since I just recently got into fish and got the leopard plecos for a couple of tanks. I have two people wanting to give me their tanks with the pleco over a foot long that has outlived all the fish. One guy told me the pleco out lived the other fish twice.
Im actually happy they kept the tanks going for the plecos. That isn't usually the fish of choice.

I doubt there is a record of the longest lived pleco, but I do know they can live quite a long time. I bought a pair from a breeder in Florida that claimed he had some about 20 years old. I'm sure the average is lower than that. I check a few of the better catfish websites and none of them said anything about lifespan.

had one for 7 years then gave it away, he was about 15 inches long and still growing.
