This is treatable. I've had fish that develop a bacterial infection due to poor water, they had red spots near the gills. Also, if your fish gets injured and there are high levels of ammonia in the water your fish can suffer from ammonia burn, where the injury could just be a small spot but the ammonia causes the injury to get bigger and worse.

You can buy anti-bacterial medicine at your local pet store. Go to a tropical fish store if you have questions, a place that only sells fish and maybe other pet stuff. Clerks there know more about fish than those at say petsmart or petco. And they can test water samples you bring to them so they can see whats wrong.

Always keep in mind to always change you fish's tank water, siphon the gravel bottom of poo and excess food (this can cause a bloom of bad bacteria in the water), and clean the filter regularly!!!

my goldfish has gotten that before too. i dont really know what it is but all my fish have died afterwards and my best guess is it is some sort of internal bleeding or something is wrong with it's insides and my guess is that there is no way to treat it but you could try going to a pet store and if there is any treatment it would probobly be some sort of liquid drops that you put in the water.

We'll need a bit more info before we can help. Tank size, fish size, size of the spots? only on one side? Anything else you can think to add about the fish, the water of the filtration? Add some details and I'll check back in a bit and see what we can do.

There are a few possibilities - is this just a reddish sore, or is there a white cottony growth around it?

I'll include a link to a page with diseases and treatments - if there's a white cottony growth, start with the info for columnaris and epistylis. If not, start with ulcer disease and vibrosis.

Without knowing more, or being able to see your fish, there's not that much we can tell you.

Go to your local pet store that sells fish & they can help you, they do have medicines for sick fish, take the fish or at least some of the water from the aquarium when you go & they should be able to help you !
