Fish - March 2007

I have a ten gallon tank with just one peacock eel at the moment. there were 4 gouramis with him but they picked on each other and one died, raising my ammonia levels, so i took the three bak to the store to findout walmart sold me the bigger gouramis rather than the dwarfs.. i had my water tested and i waited and tested them again and the pet store said my ammonia is zero but the nitrates were still high. how long shouldi wait before doing any water changes and how much. so i can add some platies? the temp is 78 degrees.

hey everyone,

my fish tank really stinks. well, actualyl the filter seems to be what stinks, not just the tank. i've read through a few threads, and i haven't found anything that sounds like my problem.
i have a penguin bio wheel filter, and it seems to be the source of the smell. is this normal? i've had the filter for about a week. my 10 gallon tank is pretty clear and the fish seem to be doing fine.

I have been running a tropical fish tank for the last 3 months with an undergravel filter system. I would like to know whats the best filter system for it. Undergravel or internal filter system which one is the best choice. I have been haning problems with the pump staying connected to the undergravel filter and am considering changing to a Hydor Ekip Thermofilter and would greatly appreciate any advice given.

if you have a goldfish do they stop growing when they fit the tank or do u have to keep getting a bigger tank coz when i got mi fish he was small and now hes alot bigger and dont know if hes going to keep growing.

I posted a question a few days ago about Silver standing on her head. She has stopped that now but she is no longer eating and I'm getting more worried about her raised scales. She does not resemble a pine cone (yet anyway!) and her bloating isnt that bad, it hasnt got any worse. She is being treated with this 'Fish revitaliser' stuff which has some sort of salt in it. She is still in the tank with my other fish. She does move but she isn't swimming around. I am so scared it might be dropsy. I am 13 and she is my beloved pet, I would honestly cry for weeks if anything ever happened to her. The lady in the pet shop said she has constipation, a bacterial infection and a swim bladder infection (I cheaked and all the sympotoms are correct except the scales) and the salt stuff is meant to treat this. If it is dropsy though it is in it's very early stages. The water was cleaned out last week. Please can someone help!!!

I purchased this dragon fish on March 1st ,2007.Its in a 55 gallon tank with 2 bala sharks ,1 irid shark,1 plec.My tanks temperature is abt 70 -78 .Other fishes eats all there food, there are still alittle food left in the tank but i guess the dragon fish has a hard time finding its way ,and after couple min those foods are alll gone ,because of my other fishes in the tank.Help pleazz.

Has anyone else had this problem ??
I have a freshwater fish tank and it doesnt have alot of fish its pretty small like average size not huge but its probably 50 gallons ? something like that idk i got it for my b-day like 10 years ago
but anyways recently i got more fish and 3 weeks later hundreds of snails were found on the walls of the tank and all over the rocks and other things in the fish tank ! is this normal or is it something that could have come in with the new fish? not sure how it could have transfered over though becuase im pretty sure there werent any snails in the bag with the fish.
Their really small like a centimeter.. i saw one that might have been a half an inch but it disappeared.. the fish seem to be eating them and sometimes they go away then i see there are like 500 more!! how do i get rid of these? we havent changed the type of food so im not sure what it is or how to get rid of them? their not harming anything their just really odd

I have two chromis. A large one, and a smaller one. The big one is a turquoise color but the small one is a lime green. Is is because of the age? Will they look identical when they are full grown? Im asking this because I want a matching group. thanks.

I had 6 fish and 3 died from nitrites so i took the 3 that were alive to someone else. I then cleaned out my fish tank until the water was safe. I then addded 3 fish and a snail. There were 2 swordtails and 1 guppy. one swordtalil has died and my guppy just died and i dont know why. They died in the same place too. I tested the water and it was fine. I dont understand. What should i do????

how many piranhas can i put in a 25 gallon long tank, for about a couple of months? they're going to be about 1 - 1.5". what kind of filter would i need for this size of a tank? type of live plants? what other fish can be with them?
