Yeah just don't dump it right in, either use your hand to lower it in or use a cup so you don't hit your fish or stress them out too much.

Well, if i were doing this, i would move all the gravel to one side of the tank. Then take it out with a cup or something. I would do the same thing with the new gravel, add it to the side of the tank and spread it out on the bottom with your hand. Good Luck, just keep in mind any either way you going to stress your fish, but they'll get over it once they have nice clean gravel

Nunya is correct, the others are wrong.
You don't need to take the fish out. Just put the gravel in (after rinsing it) a handful at a time. Lower your hand into the water, don't pour it in from the surface.

I say it's not a good idea. 1) it scares the fish 2) The rocks could get stuck in your plants or other decorations 3) your fish could easily get buried. Expecially if you have a corydora or another bottom dwelling fish. It doesnt take that long. Just scoop the fish out, put them in a bowl with water from the aquarium, put the gravel in, get it out of the decorations, and then put the fish back in. Much luck

You can leave the fish inside. Just be gentle. Remember you are causing the equal of an earthquake for the fish. Don't just dump it in... But the adding of the gravel itself will be OK for them. :-)

yes but clean it with water only....no soap! you cannot rinse all the soap out so do not use it. rinse rocks very well under hot water. allow them to dry/cool thoroughly and add them very slowly as to prevent stirring up excessive sediment. this is not a quick job so make sure you have plenty of time allotted to do it properly. I would vacuum the existing gravel no later than the day before or sooner than 2 to 3 hours before adding rock also. hope this helps and by all means get a second, 3rd, 4th, etc. opinion before diving head first into my instructions.

Dude, like if you just pour it in the fish should get out the way, man. Like totally.

Really I'd say it is better to leave the fish in than to remove them and put them back in again, that would cause them more stress than falling gravel.

I second what other people said and say: do it slow and careful and you'll be OK.

No problem at all. Just be careful not to nail fish with the new gravel as Nunya said and you'll be fine.

Absolutely not!!!!! It really scares the fish, trust me, I tested it out and one of my fish died. I would try, though, using a small fish net to take the fis out and then do it. You won't need a seperate tank to put the fish in while you're adding gravel, just put them in a CLEAN(hence the caps) houshold bowl. Do not put anything in the bowl, they'll already be scared enough.
