They dont grow the size of the tank but they do get to be a certain percentage of the tank... if that makes sense... say you have a 10 gal tank then they will get like 5%- 10% of the tank... they will never get to the size (from one side to the other) of the tank... I hope this was helpful!!

I wish I could say Yes but it's not quite true! It's called Stunting and is nothing short of cruelty!
Unfortunately the internal organs don't stop growing although the body will!
If you keep him in a small tank he'll stay a certain size and survive but will be more susceptible to disease, often undetectable and the tank will require more work to keep the water quality high. Most die young, (they can live over 20years) from ammonia poisoning as the Goldfish produces a lot of waste compared to most fish!
If you moved him to a larger tank or (better still) a pond he should grow very large!

This is the biggest misconception amoung new fish keepers. The goldfish, Carassius auratus, was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is still one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish. A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is a domesticated version of a dark-gray/olive/brown carp native to east Asia (first domesticated in China) that was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century. The mutation that gave rise to the goldfish is also known from other cyprinid species, such as common carp and tench.

Since goldfish are pond fish and not really aquarium fish their requirements are also different. Such as the myth that 1 inch of fish to 1 gallon of water. Gold fish requrie 1 sq. foot of Surface water per inch of fish. Many gold fish are kept quite healthy in tanks all over the world and do not REQUIRE a Pond.

Stunting really isn't an issue with goldfish either. They will grow until they reach the size they are meant to be. Pieces parts will not grow faster or keep growing while other parts wont.

If someone tells you "their fish didn't grow" chances are they had a smaller end fish. Gold fish depending on size will grow from approximately 3" to over 20". Again depending on what type you have.

your fish will keep growing.

He will stop growing on the outside but his internal organs will keep growing, this will cause an early and probably painful death.

Buy a much bigger tank-Like 50 gallons or else let him go to someone who has a pond and buy a few cloud mountain minnows as they never get big.

Goldfish "growing to fit their container" is a myth and misconception. What's really occurring is called "stunting". The outside of the goldfish may stay fairly small, but their organs keep trying to grow, so they eventually die from their inability to grow correctly as their organs get mashed, sounds pleasant doesn't it?
What usually occurs before that happens though is that people don't provide them with enough water. When you don't have enough water for them, they'll produce so much ammonia that they'll sicken and die. (death by raw sewage, also a really pleasant way to go) People seem to think goldfish only live a few years, but they can live over 20!

Yes .Some fish can grow larger than others. I say get a larger tank. The fish needs room to grow. I think the fish may die if there is no room to grow.

yes he will keep growing...
Goldfish only growing to the size of their tank is a myth. The goldfish usually die by amonia posioning or relaese of a growth hormone before they get the chance to out grow small tanks

They grow to a size that the tank will let them! If you keep them in a small tank it will stunk there growth! The only way ammonia will kill them is if you don't monitor it! if it gets to high do a water change!!!! But yes if you have a gold fish in a large pond or tank they will get big, but if you have then in a Small tank they will stay small!!
