Fish - February 2007

I really like molly fish and every time I get some from pet smart they die. I've had dalmatian molly's, black molly's, and creamsicle molly's. I don't really think I'm doing anything wrong. I raise betta fish. I also have gourami's gold fish, chilids, and puffer fish and they never seem to die. Does anyone have any advice on what I might be doing wrong?

Ever since I moved to a new town, my fish have been dying on me. I am thinking that it could be the water because I have never had problems before. Can I use that water that you fill up at the store? If so do I need to add any aqua safe, or anything to it before putting it in the tank.

He has a white coat all over his body, and I treated it with Melafix, but It just seems to be getting worse. It looks life a fungus to me, but it does'nt have that cotton-like growth on it. He is starting to do really bad. Had him for 2 years!

I have a tank full of Malawi African Cichlids and I was just wondering what kind of vegetables should I feed them? I already feed them spirulina flakes and some color enhancing flakes as well. They are about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long each.

I just got 2 dojo loached over the last 2 weeks in my new 120 gallon tank (yes the tank was cycled properly before putting in fish, all levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are normal) along with 6 serpae tetra bought 2 weeks ago.
I did not know I was going to get dojo's when I first set up the tank 13 weeks ago so I bought $80 worth of a pretty gravel that is not round cut. I've heard dojo's need a softer bottom since they like to burrow but not sure what to do now that I spend the money on this gravel and can't return it.
They are not very active (one is spotted one is a gold) not sure if it's because of the bottom, the temp is set at 75 degrees which I know is at the high end for them. I am still working on decorating it, they haven't redecorated live plants I've put in there so far and I plan on getting driftwood soon. There are only 6 plants in there now and a house decor with a water wheel and bubbles. Any ideas on best way to get them more active??

Thanks for the help!!

I was cleaning out the tank and I noticed that my male is very, very thin. I thought it was just because he was a male and I was comparing him to the female. I thought I'd ask, just in case. Here's a picture I snapped of him from above: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/closetpenguin/My%20Babies/DSC07525-1.jpg .Is he oddly thin or is it just normal? He eats just fine and has no other problems, except maybe boredom, but I'm not quite sure how to cure that when it comes to fish. He's not lonely, for he has three female companions. He hasnt gotten any of them pregnant. I'm also worried about this. Is he okay?

Also, how much longer until my Dalmation Molly gives birth? I'm wondering because I'm going up North for the weekend and I dont want her giving birth while I'm not at home. Here's her picture: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/closetpenguin/My%20Babies/DSC07526.jpg .

Thank you in advance.

I was wondering. Is it a must that you keep the aquarium light on at all times. I find it difficult to sleep with it on at night. Can I turn it off? Of course if it would cause some sort of harm to my fish then I will simply deal with it

Hello,
I'm new to the Betta world and love my petstore kids, but would like to find another source for obtaining healthy, better quality betta's - preferably in the Columbus, Ohio area. Thanks.

I would like a good book about setting up and maintaining a freshwater aquarium. Preferably focused on guppies but if it is more general that's fine, too. Thank you:)

There's 2 bumps on one side, the biggest one is on the middle of his body, and a smaller is above it. On the other side a medium bump is also on the middle of his body. They're not white, so I don't think it's ICH, but is it part a process where they shed they're scales or something? I have a fantail in the tank with him and he's fine. But the gold fish's scales seem a little discolored....what's going on?

I have a volital (sp?) lionfish. We had him a week and he didn't eat the sinking pellets that we had. So we went to the fish store and he suggested feeder guppies, so we got six of them and he ate them ALL!!! How many should we give him at a time and how often? I also don't want to go to the store everyday to get more. How do you "store" live feeder guppies? I don't know anything about this stuff, so any and all advise will be greatly appreciated. When we bought the lionfish, another gentleman at the store said that he would eat the pellets, but he was apparantly wrong. Thank you!!!

I have established that the Blue Mbuna species i am wanting to stock with does not like real plants as the true habitat in Lake Malawi doesnt have many plants but rocks. I need to know the best way to set up a rock formation but it cant be to heavy for my tank already weighs around 400lbs. Right now the tank has no fish, 2 1/2 in. of medium size gravel, a few artificial plants. There is plenty of room. I just need something nice and preferably inexpensive. I went to Petsmart and for a large rock formation with caves was $60. Any help????????????

Hi all, I am a newbie to the fish hobby. In fact, I don't even have any fish yet. I've been doing research on the web and have learned a lot. My tap water with test strips says that my water 0 nitrates, 0 nitrites, is very hard, high alkalinity and high ph. So I replaced 2 gallons of the water with rain water. That dropped the ph and alkalinity and softened the water. But the problem is the nitrites is now saying stress. The nitrates didn't change. I was planning to go get a couple of starter fish tonight. Now I'm worried that they'll die before my 10 gallon tank has a chance to cycle. Any suggestions? Thank you.
