We have a 50 gallon tank with a few live potted plants and a roman collesum in the middle for decoration....gravel bottom. There is nothing else in the tank.

When they are young you could put in up to 6 or so. This won't work for long as they wll pair up and become territorial. As adults you may only be able have a single pair. Certainly more 4 angels will go badly in the end.

Personally I'd go with about 4 angels, and stock the tank with more peaceful gouramis (no kissing, or paradise), large tetras, and barbs.

Angle fish, though cute, are semi agressive fish (fin nippers) and VERY territorial. we had one once (in a 30 gallon with other fish) that grew to be 3" in body, not including fins. it killed off the other angles we tried to put in the tank. 3-4 should do, more would work but will get crowded as they grow. they look so little at first but within a year, the body should measure around 2" good part is you can hand feed them as they will attack (strike at) most anything that touches the top of the water.

If you're going to have JUST angelfish, 5 would be good.
Or 4 angelfish and a school of rummy nose or cardinal tetras, and a few corydoras.
