I was wondering. Is it a must that you keep the aquarium light on at all times. I find it difficult to sleep with it on at night. Can I turn it off? Of course if it would cause some sort of harm to my fish then I will simply deal with it

The light is not even a mandatory requirement for the tank if you don't have live plants. Leaving it on less prevents algae build-up and having the room light on, or daytime window light, is plenty for the fish to see by. I actually only turn the lights on (except for my planted tank) when I am actually there to view the tanks, and because of this algae growth is very slow and easy to keep on top of. No matter what they should have a night time of at least 8 hours so they experience a natural day-night cycle. Of course, many tropical fish do live near the equator where it can be daytime almost 24hrs around.. well, never mind that, just turn 'em off at night.

leaving the light on 24/7 will also cause a build up of Algae. So you can turn it off at night. The best thing to do is to put it on a timer so that it automatically turns on/off at certain times of the day.

They need to the light off sometime during the day (night time would be awesome) so they can sleep =) Since they dont have eyelids they need darkness to sleep... So have a good night sleep with the light OFF every night!!

No. You actually should not keep your aquarium light on 24 hours a day. It causes an excess in algea growth, and other problems in your aquarium.

No; in fact, you should be turning your light off at night.
Fish, like people, need a day and a night to properly rest and metabolize. I suggest you get a five dollar timer and set your tank to turn on in the morning and turn off in the evening, so the light is on for about 10 hours.

You don't want your light to be on for too long, it promotes algae growth. You should have a heater in your tank keeping them warm.
