Fish - December 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

We are having an unusual cold snap here and temps are going down to 20's for the next few nights.

I am worried about the fish I have in an outdoor pond. I have two giagantic fancy goldfish that are about 3 years old. This morning the pond top was frozen. The pond holds about 75 gallons.

What is the best way to help the fish thru the next few nights?

I thought about putting a heat lamp out there, close to the water, but worry a raccoon might knock it into the water.

Should I bring the fish in and put them into a bucket - a bucket is all I have. They would be warmer, but would they stress out? The bucket is small for them, but it's just for a few days.

what is the best way to reduce the stress on the poor little fish?

I have asked pet stores and I keep getting different answers. One says Betas live well with fantails, other pet stores say no but tetras, still others say Mollies...I am confused. I don't want to hurt the four that I already have but would like to add at least one more.

I have taken care of many kinds of fishes and yet the Fighting Fish seems to be not my forte (they do not last for more than 3 months on me!). I place my Bettas on an adequate large jar. What should I feed my Betta? How not to stress it?

I have a tank which holds 180 litres (39.6 gallons). I have filled it and completed the nitrogen cycle and it is ready for me to start to gradually add my tropical fish! But I dont know which ones to get, how many to get and what order to add them in.

I have a goldfish and a plecostomus in a 20 gallon tank with a heater to support that. I am leaving the country for several months and leaving them in the care of family members.

While I am gone, these family members intend on taking a week long vacation. While they are away, they plan to shut off the heat. We leave in Minnesota, and it can get rather cold. Anywhere from 40 degrees F to -40 degrees F.

I was wondering if anyone knew if the heater will be able to keep my fish warm enough while they are gone. If not, are there any suggestions as to what I can do to keep them warm?

Thank you.

She just had them, but it ranged from 13 hours since she had her first one. She is still fat, though, will she have more? She is a lot fatter than my non-pregnant ones, but she is having some trouble, I think.

Some of the stuff I read people here say about bettas is outrageous. I would like to know where you came up with the information that they get stressed in big tanks and that they always kill everything in the tank with them.

Bettas do great in big tanks, in fact the bigger the better! And they are very good community fish, seldom will you find a betta that kills everything in sight. Just don't keep them with other bettas and most of the time they will be fine!

I bought a betta and a dwarf frog in mid november and put them together in a 1 gallon lighted tank that stays steady temp. at 78. I did a lot of research before I even went shopping for them. Anyway, 2 days ago my betta was swimming around happily and normally, and literally 2 minutes later he was dead on the bottom of the tank (not floating?) I waited a little to make sure he was dead. Then I bought a new betta and the same thing happened. I don't think my frog did it because the fish had no torn fins or anything and the frog was not aggressive and niether was the fish to each other. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I don't want my lone, healthy frog to be alone in this tank... I'm just not sure what kind of friend to get him or what caused my bettas to die so that it doesn't happen again... suggestions?

I have a fish (Barb) and a Red Cap Oranda. The Barb is orange with a big white spot on its sides and is starting to get black fin tips, def new growth but still pretty transparent looking. I brought him home over thxgiving break and I brought home the Oranda yesterday for winter break (not enough room to bring them both home at the same time). To my surprise, the Barb had grown about 1 inch! He was a little baby just a few weeks ago. I got him for free b/c I'm a bio major and fish were used for experiments, and they were all sick in the tank so I rescued the little guy. I'm worried about the tank size he's in with growing that fast. I am either going to get him a bigger tank OR put him with the Oranda and buy a big tank for both of them. BUT I don't know about compatibility! The Oranda I've had for almost a year now and is over 2 inches long (including caudal fin). The Barb is an inch and a half now. I know sometimes size is an issue with compatibility as well as spp. Will this work?

I have a 2 gallon fish tank with a small whisper filter. It has one male betta, gravel and 3 fake plants. I have developed a white film on top of the water. This film is almost cottony when I stir the water. What is it and how can I get rid of this?
I had another betta die and the water was the same way. I think Ich killed the other betta.

This tank was cleaned real well and let to run for a week before the new betta came along!

Other than the white film, the tank is good and so is the fish (i hope!)
