Fish - December 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

I have had this fish for over a year and a half. And it died today. What should I do with him. I feel really bad about it. I don't want to flush him down the toilet. So what else could I do with him.

And please don't be sarcastic. I really am bummed about it.

I have a 2 gallon tank with one male betta. The tank has a film on the top. It almost looks like an oil spill would. I stir the top and little fuzzy float through the water.
I think this killed the last betta and playco I had.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

It just appeared out of nowhere. It is quite big and near the fin. Could anyone help answer this?

my beta fish (by the way i bought about a week ago) well what it is doing is, you know the gills on the back of there neck that they open and close for oxygen? My fish is opening then really big like an inch away from the body. The other thing is he is keeping them open for as long as a minute, is this normal?

My pregnant guppy has been showing signs for delivery for afew days now, but whenever i stick her in the breeding box she does nothing, i keep her in there over night and then end up taking her out in the morning cause i dont want her in there too long getting stressed. Then half way through the day she shows signs again and the same thing happens.

I can almost see the fry in her gravid spot and she looks about ready to burst. The signs she has been reguarly showing is not eating (yet when i test this with one piece of flake food after her being in the breeding box for afew hours, she eats it?!), being unsocial, and pacing up and down the sides of the tank.

so when will she deliver and why hasnt she yet?

here are afew pictures i took of her...

I have a 30 gallon freshwarter tank with 2 plecos. I have tried all I can think of to reduce the nitrate and I'm not able to. The water I use during water changes has a trace amount and I'm adding nitraban to it. I had a gourami's and platy's with the plecos and they did fine and suddenly died. I figure the high nitrate level is the reason my fish are dying. What else can I do? I've even added r/o water. I have a lot of little snails, could they be the culprit? Plants don't do well, they wind up getting eaten.

This is quite a small tank... about 1"w x 1"d x 1"h.. a cube really. It has a few tetras in it with a very small rainbow shark and a guerami. The tank has an undergravel filter that was keeping the water clear but began leaving residue over the gravel so i had to use the gravel cleaner and do a small water change. A day or so after I did this the water began getting murkier and is not very clear at all. I bought a second filter for the tank to try and clear it but the water is still murky three days later.

I don't think it is the water as I did a water change in my other tanks at the same time and they are perfectly clear...

what could be causing this and how can I correct it?... please help...

My friend brent wanted to get 2 electric blue cichlids and put them into his 17 gallon, and I'm not sure if it would work or not, it would be the only two fish in there i would expect.

I have a 7" and two four inch goldfish that were in a pond that leaked. There had been lots of snails and more plants in the larger 50 gallon pond. I moved them to a somewhat warmer but smaller (5 galllon) tank 48 hours ago. The large goldfish has some scales missing, and all are breathing with some effort. Last night I started the tank on broad spectrum antibiotics for both gram positive and negative bacteria (Mardel's Maracyn and Maracyn-Two.) Since these presumably will kill desired bacteria as well as undesired and may lead to an increase in fungus in the tank/fish, willI I need to treat with a fungicide next? Or would refreshed natural pond water and/or acidophilus be better?
This morning I see the smaller two grazing, but not the big one. The water was high in alkalinity and ph, so I changed 25% of the water and the chemistry is all acceptable now . Should I get more snails or plants back in? Other suggestions?

I do not want to breed them and have fry quite yet because I'm not prepared to take care of them. Or do I really need to include females with them to keep the peace?

He's a few months old now, so he's like ALMOST an inch long. lol I have him in a plastic, purple vase with fake plants and some clear rocks. I change his water every week or so and put algae destroying stuff in and I feed him every other day. Do I need to get him a bubbler or plant for oxygen? Or are they like goldfish where they don't really need that? If so, can you suggest a good 'water plant'?

I do not have a lot of experience with aquariums, but I am looking at a 75 gallon saltwater reef aquarium I found locally on ebay that could be modified into a large turtle habitat. Two questions... could I effectively change a saltwater aquarium into a freshwater? I don't believe it would be a problem after cleaning, but I need to make sure.

Also, the ad said the wet dry filter pump needs to be replumbed. What does that mean and how do I do that?

Here is the link to the item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280059666688&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:US:1

Is this a good idea? I currently have my turtles in a 55 gallon which was fine when they were a little smaller, but now they are nearing adulthood and I would like to get them in something bigger.

Any advice would be appreciated. If you know where I might pick up a used tank in the fort worth area, then that advice would be appreciated.
