No... Despite popular belief they're wrong.
Fish have feelings in a manner of speaking, they wont cry if you insult them, but if you deprive them of company, even their health can be effected by this. Fish will live longer if kept in pairs, they will suffer less parasites and diseases with more of their own kind around, and behave differently in groups aswell.
Many fish will exert severe behavioral changes if deprived of their common brethren, such as Danio Riero, with a group less than 5-7 the fish swim around like a goldfish... you get 5 together, they constantly shoal (school) across the top of the aquarium. For fish such as this, it would be strongly illadvised to purchase individuals...
However you've noticed people saying bettas are best alone, and this is also true. Male bettas are fighters with zeal! they'll not stop till the other is dead if they're put together, even so sensitive are their tempers that aquarium dividers do not always stop them from injuring themselves while trying to get through the divider and at the other specimen... For a fish like this you would seriously need it to be alone unless it has been conditioned for spawning, and at that... you'll only give him female company for a very brief time period.
What will truly govern your choice of fish that you purchase will be the size of the environment you're preparing for them... You are cycling your water right? (Google.com see: Nitrogen Cycle - Focus non-terrestrial). This is an imperative step to take before purchasing fish.
So if you have a 10 gallon tank or a 60 gallon tank, it will make a massive difference in which fish you buy. More than this, there are thousands of species, the better question should be... What are you interested in?
Feel free top pop me an email if you think of a fish in particular you'd like some info on.

that's stunning that you're basically planning to save one betta in it extremely of attempting to stuff it with as many fish as a chance. With a tank this length and the heater and each little thing else your betta will be not basically spoiled yet very healthful :) so a procedures as information, i'd basically say that betta's love laying interior the leaves of stay flowers, so possibly upload those. and so as that they prefer a kind of meals, fantastically freeze dried bloodworms. Betta's are not huge followers of air pumps so basically make confident the bypass is low. Yay for someone who actual knows/cares about a thanks to save a fish!

This depends greatly on the type of fish. Some fish are schooling or schoaling fish and really will not do well unless they are with several others of the same species.

do u mean just one fish in a whole tank? yes of course u don't have to have a bunch of them but i would choose a fish that doesn't care if it has companions. I wouldn't get like community fish who like to stay in groups i'd get somthing that is kinda a loner anyway.
