I have a 7" and two four inch goldfish that were in a pond that leaked. There had been lots of snails and more plants in the larger 50 gallon pond. I moved them to a somewhat warmer but smaller (5 galllon) tank 48 hours ago. The large goldfish has some scales missing, and all are breathing with some effort. Last night I started the tank on broad spectrum antibiotics for both gram positive and negative bacteria (Mardel's Maracyn and Maracyn-Two.) Since these presumably will kill desired bacteria as well as undesired and may lead to an increase in fungus in the tank/fish, willI I need to treat with a fungicide next? Or would refreshed natural pond water and/or acidophilus be better?
This morning I see the smaller two grazing, but not the big one. The water was high in alkalinity and ph, so I changed 25% of the water and the chemistry is all acceptable now . Should I get more snails or plants back in? Other suggestions?

The problem most likely is ammonia build up. Three fairly large goldfish in a 5 gallon tank is overstocked. The waste produced by the fish is quickly converted into ammonia, which is toxic to the fish. Without a filter, they have almost no chance. The benificial bacteria will not be able to culture fast enough without a filter, and even with a filter, three large goldfish in a 5 gallon tank, the filter would still be overwhelmed. The heavy breathing is probably due to ammonia or nitrite burns of the gill tissue, making it difficult for the fish to 'breathe'. When you say the water chemistry is all acceptable, what exactly are you talking about? Did you test for Ammonia, NitrIte or NitrAte? These parameters are probably the most important. If you want to save these fish, get them into a larger tank asap.

while the above people are partially right about needing a filter and not being able to keep the fish in that small of tank, they're not completely right. you can't have a filter while treating them as I'm sure you know, because it will filter out the medicine. and you can't keep the goldfish in that tank for an extended period of time, but while they heal they'll be fine as long as you stay on top of water balances. as for it being cycled, in cases of emergency uncycled water is better than waiting for a tank to cycle and drying up instead. don't bother with plants and snails because they can't stay in that tank. as a permanent tank you'd need at least 40gallons.

as for treating it for anything else I'd wait to see if symptoms arise first. treating them unnecessarily strengthens the disease and weakens their immune system. if symptoms of fungus appear then treat them. I suggest just keeping a close eye on them for disease since they' in such a small tank and probably very stressed they're prone to many things. also keep a close watch on the chemistry. once they are okay or as soon as you have a better tank cycled put them in the more suitable tank ASAP. this will help them regain strength and be less stressed.

appears like Septicemia and this can be brought about by technique of the presence of Parasites which aren't any further alway's considered with the bare eye. the first area of do is is alway's try the water in spite of the undeniable fact that, the rule of thumb is that undesirable water high quality=parasites=secondary infections. no longer alway's, yet maximum of the time. And if its a very new fish, the prospect is it had cooties already. Medicated foodstuff mutually with romet B, Medi gold, are the a number of meals used yet no longer alway's obtainable on the interior sight puppy save and commonly will be bought on line at places like Goldfish Connection. today, i'd search for suggestion from experts, yet get the fish on a round of medicated foodstuff and advance the 02, improve the temp to seventy 8-seventy 9* slowly, no more beneficial then 2* in line with hour. you may dose with Prazi professional for flukes and slowly convey the salt as a lot as 0.3%, you try this by technique of raising by technique of 0.a million% in line with day for 3 day's. a million tsp in line with gl. rock salt, image voltaic salt, canning salt, AQ salt, sea salt any of those will income this lengthy because it includes no binders, elements or YPS. a million tsp in line with gl = 0.a million%. Dissolve this well-known earlier dispensing around the tank and income this slowly, and not in any respect in filter out. Prazi will be dosed in 2 consecutive doses, there are 2 sorts of flukes, gill fluke, and body flukes, one is a egg layer, the different a stay bearer and the egg layer takes a 2d dose. The salt will conceal a number of different sorts of parasites, ich, costia,Chilo. for more beneficial help attempt GAB or Koivet!

Try using a filter. This will help keep the environment clean and full of oxygen so the fish can breath easier. You will need to change it sometimes so keep an eye on the color of the water. If it gets cloudy then rinse the filter or put a new one in.
Hope this helps.

two 7" goldfish CANNOT live in a 5 gallon tank. It is likely uncycled and too small.

What goldfish like least is changes to there surroundings, so my suggestion is ust to leave them alone. Any more fiddling with their environment will only upset them more.
