If you have a saltwater tank, you might look into this. I've seen people who pump ocean water directly into their tanks. You'll want a filter to remove the parasites.
However, beaches are often polluted areas and beach water is not the cleanest water.
If you don't have any fish yet, experiment with some live rock, ocean water, and a clean up crew. Monitor your water closely and test frequently. Then, use your discretion. If you have a specialized fish store in your area, they may be able to give more insight as to whether the beaches you live by are safe for aquaria.

However, it is not necessary. You can simply use water with salt additives.

Yes, it is perfectly acceptable to grab ocean water straight from the ocean to put in your tank. Cleaning of the water will be done by the filters. If you want to purchase already cleaned ocean water, your local Fish Store will for sure have it, but it is definitely not necessary. Just make sure you have the proper Saltwater Filter for your specific sized tank and enjoy. You wouldn't put fish into your tank until you allotted enough time for the bacteria to cycle, so it really doesn't matter where you get your saltwater from.

I did that as an experiment. I took a couple of 5 gallon bottles to the beach and filled them up. Put it in a newly set up tank, turned on the filters, and discovered that there was life in there! Tiny little 'bugs' a little bigger than a flea, that seemed to enjoy the water flow around the filter tubes. Eventually I started putting creatures in there. I suspect it was my inexperience that killed the flame clam. The others lived considerably longer.

You would be taking a chance with parasites, but it can be done. Consider filtering the water as you grab it. Good luck.

Maybe as an experiment with some blue damsels or something, a UV sterilizer would be well advised for the parasites, etc. Living in Kansas I have not tried this but have heard the general practice is unsafe. I definitely would not do it if I had any livestock of value in my tank.

I wouldn't do that. You might hurt you fish and your tank. The ocean is full of stuff that you don't want your fish to live in. I would go to my local pet store and ask questions on how to make my own salt water and what fish to put in it. That would be better then putting ocean water in it.
