Hi! I'm a first-time aquarium owner and I'm trying to learn enough about my fish to keep them happy and healthy. I have read all of the postings concerning the recommended number of hours that the light should be left on. My question is: Does it matter if you leave the lights on during the day or all night? Of course we would prefer to have the light on at night because we can see the fish better but we don't want to leave it on if fish really need it to be on during the day and off at night. I've gotten some mixed responses to this question so any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 10 gallon aquarium fully cycled (0 ammonia and 0 nitrite with 15% water changes weekly) I have 2 males and 3 females and up til today they were great. Now one of my females (the one I have had for a week and a half has started being afraid of my hand, and swimmin really quickly up and down the aquarium and then hiding in the plants. I have only had fish a short while and don't know if this is normal. Her tail is also swishing very fast and when she rests she kind of lays against the plant on her side...What is going on with my guppy?

I have a bunch of little aquariums/fishbowls but the only creature I can find suitable for these living environments are betta fish. They are mostly around the size of one-gallon, unheated, unfiltered tanks. I know no tropical fish would work but I have a zebra danio in one and it is doing fine. ( I know they're supposed to be in groups...I'm working on a way I can get him friends without giving him away). I have guppies in a ten-gallon heated tank - could they work in the smaller tanks? Please don't tell me to put goldfish in the bowl - I hear it's cruel. I'm thinking of something along the lines of white cloud mountain minnows and ghost shrimp. If I do get the white clouds, how many could I keep in a one gallon? Will these work? Any suggestions on other fish?

Its not accually an aquariam but im moving my small guppy into a large (1 gal) tupperware container because theo other fish are nipping at it and also its not full grown so i feel like the filter might suck its tail in. So what I need to know is how often should I clean it because it wont have a filter and also what else should I do to modify it and make sure there is enough oxygen in the water

Ok guys, I've read for a while and I think I need to get the following:

1layer - flourite, for the plants to root

2layer - just a little laterite for nutrition

3 layer - any kind of gravel for decor purpose only

Is this correct... any recommendations?
