Some fish don't become pregnant, some do. First you should find out if the fish can even get pregnant. If they do become pregnant sometimes it's very easy to tell since you can see the babies in the belly, like with guppies you can see the babies eyes but with other fish it may not be that easy.

Most fish are egglayers, they do get a little round when filling with eggs, but they don't get pregnant And they won't scatter eggs unless conditions are right and there is a male to fertilize them, so there is no way of knowing when you buy them. With livebearers (Mollies, Platties, Guppies), the females are pretty much always pregnant. They can store sperm for several months. One that is about to give birth will be very large and her belly will look rounded when you look at her from the front. Also, on lighter colored species, you should be able to see a dark "gravid" spot at the base of her tail. You don't want to buy a female that looks this far along though because often the stress of moving to a new aquarium will cause her to give birth early and you'll end up with a petstore bag full of dead and dying baby fish.

It depends on the kind of fish you have. Some fish lay eggs and others have babies. Like I have guppies and they have babies. And to tell they are pregnant is at the back end of them they get coal black and they get a little bigger but they don't get fat.
Here is a website that helps me when I need to know something, maybe it will help you too. Just type in the type of fish you want to know about and it give you all kinds of information. Good Luck

depending on the fish the belly will turn a dark color, and be fatter than the other fish in the tank. Also you can ask the person at the pet store where you get your fish, if they don't know, perhaps you should go to a pet store that specializes in fish and there habits.

Look at their bellies. Try starting with livebearers like guppies, swordtails, or mollies. All are very hardy, and easy to breed. I usually have 1 male for two females
