I live in a dorm and I want to get a fish for my room because I love animals and I miss having them around and all I can have in my room is a fish. It would be in a bowl and has to be a pretty hardy fish so it can go home with me for holidays (thanksgiving, christmas and spring break) oh and I don't really want a goldfish, I've had those before and want to try something new. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm not sure what their are all about... I mean come on we all know that you have to put them in water and watch them grown... but I want to know how long they live... I looked them up... but all it said was that they would reproduce and all this other stuff... So if they reproduce... do I need to buy a bigger tank... is this going to be a huge project that I should avoid. is it like fish? or what... could someone please help me for experience only. I don't want any references to a web page. if you've had them or have them let me know how it was.... thanks

I am looking to upgrade my 29 gallon aquarium in my science classroom to a 55 gallon tank. The current tank is on a 20' long formica countertop with a drawer units beneath, and I would like to put the new setup there too. The whole cabinet system is built out of MDF particle board and seems pretty solid. The roughly 5' long section of this counter where the tank would go is supported by 2 x 3/4 inch MDF uprights and in the center of where the 48" long tank would sit has another 3/4 inch upright beneath it that runs the full depth of the counter. Anyone know if I can trust this to support the 650+ lbs that the tank will likely weigh?

I bought a betta earlier this year. I bought a one-gallon tank from WalMart that came with a water filtration system. I read that betta's only need one-gallon of water, so this seemed ideal for them.

I went to the fish store to pick one out. They all were in tiny, plastic bowls that had barely any water in them. They all looked like they were dying. I did not want to get one of those since they were so unhealthy, but my mother told me to save one of their lives.

I took it home, put it in the tank, and after a few days to a week, he was looking beautiful! He seemed very happy!

Now, he is not happy. His colors are very pale and his fins don't look so great. I don't know what the problem is. I take care of mine the same way my sister does, and hers is very healthy, but mine is not.

Keep in mind, I have no job and can't buy an expensive aquarium for him that regulates temperature! We're not all rich!

How can I help him be happy with his current living conditions!?

Years ago I had tropical fish, they were a proper ballache - testing water, adding fish one by one, checking the temperature, waking up to 12 dead fish floating at the top etc.

My son has been mithering me for a goldfish for a long time now, he has saved up his pocket money so I think he should have one.

Anyway I went today to buy a £3.99 tank and a couple of goldfish, you wouldn't believe what they wanted me to buy!..This is pets at home by the way .....
Water treatment (£4.99), stress coat (£5.99), water tester (£18.99)
and a load of other gubbins, basically everything you need to own tropical fish. The goldfish themselves cost £1.25 each for god's sake! So I told the guy I'd changed my mind, then sneaked back in and bought the tank and an all-in-one water treatment thing, I thought I'd go to a wee pet shop to buy the pigging fish another day.

Am I evil to not buy all that stuff? What happened to bringing a fish home in a bag and plonking it in a bowl?

I am talking about maintainance, temperature, temperment, food, sub-strata, filtre everything, incl the fish.

Professional replies would be appreciated. This is my first venture with Flowerhorn, though I have been keeping fish for 7 years now incl Goldfish, Oscar, Discus, Arwona etc.

Hello, I had 2 angel fish, 3 neon tetras, 3 sword fish, 2 bala sharks and a guppy separated in compartment. They lived together happily for 3 months and got food every day.
One day I got two silver mollies and suddently, one by one, fish started to die first the neon disapeared, then the sword fish died, then the angel fish died, one each day. To the point that there were only the 2 bala shark and the 2 mollies left and the guppy (pregnant) in the compartment. One day, the guppy was also gone from the compartment, like magic, I could never find the body. next day the bala shark jumped inside the compartment net.
who is the killer?

I am trying to figure out what tpe of fish to get. I am playing with the idea of a 10 gallon tank now.

So far I want to put in a little corydora cat fish, and a betta.

I dont know what else will work in the tank? Are there any small fish that I can put around 6 of in the tank?

All the livebearers are really pretty, but how fast do they reproduce? I dont want to end up with alot of fish, so are these a bad choice? Can you only put male livebearers in the tank(so that there are no baby fish)?

when you catch a fish, and prise the barbed hook out of its top lip, then throw it back in again......... just what is the point? and why cause potential pain to the fish ( I say potential coz no-body really knows if they feel pain do they?? so that means potentially they could) Justify this activity if you can, and the best (funniest) reason for standing/sitting at the crack of dawn, freezing cold watching a float bobbing about, gets the 10 points.......I await amusement..............
