The smell is a natural part of the nitrogen cycle. As the cycle continues, the water will get cloudy too. That is also normal and will disappear in about a week.

The complete cycle takes about 3-4 weeks. You can add one or two fish per week to help the cycle along a little, but make sure they are hardy. Zebra danios are good for cycling tanks. A school of 5-7 will look very cool in the tank when it is done cycling.

You don't say what size the tank is, but if it is big enough to have more fish, zebras get along with most all other fish.

Fresh carbon in your filter will take care of the smell.

Please no soap, mild bleach or vinegar is fine. If you can fill the tank up with ro/di water (reverse osmosis/dionized) that would be great, distilled is fine as well. Next you want to establish your biological filtration. Your most important filter for your tank. In salt water tanks, we use live rock. It is very porous and can hold a great amount of beneficial bacterias as they are not free swimmers and will adhere to the glass wall or any surface, so you want more surface space. Add a little bit of fish food to get your ammonia level to rise high, this will be the beginning of cycling your tank once that drops you will notice an increase in nitrites and that will also decrease leaving the final remains of nitrAtes. Water changes take care of that. Ammonia and nitrites are toxic to the fish, watch them levels. I have a feeling you are going to have a pretty and healthy set-up

particular there is any such element as too sparkling of a fish tank. It needs micro organism to stay to tell the tale. It relies upon on the fish you have in it on how sparkling it may be. generally you adjust 25% of the water weekly, notwithstanding it won't be faucet water it quite is from the city. in case you employ chlorinated water you may positioned the water in a container for twenty-four hrs to take the consequence of the chlorine out of the water. The chlorine can kill your fish as nicely by way of fact the wholesome micro organism they could stay to tell the tale. if your tank isn't overloaded with fish you are able to flow as quickly as a month to allow the micro organism to flourish provided you do have and algae eater as considered one of your fish on your tank. Too many may be greater desirable than 2 commonplace sized fish or 10 small fish for a tank of that length. The acid in the feces might reason undesirable micro organism in the tank. desire this helps. continually persist with the instructions to your tank in the pamplet which could have been offered with it.

if it doesn't smell good, take the whole thing down and clean it with a small amount of vinegar. vinegar will clean the whole thing out. then rise the tank out until you don't smell any more vinegar, them rise it again. Vinegar is an acid and will kill any fish. they when you fill the tank up again, buy some ( for a fresh water aquarium) aqua safe and freshwater aqua salt. the aqua safe will take out any chlorine and "bad stuff" in you tape water. the aqua salt will help they fish relax and keep them healthy. Then when you go to buy your fish- pleased don't buy walmart fish, you are only bring the potential for disease into you aquarium- take a sample of your water and have it tested. the people there should be able to tell you it you need additional chemicals.

Your fish tank will go through a cicle.... it will get cloudy and smelly,,, but then it will go away as it is groing the bacteria that will keep your fish alive... do not add any fish untill the cloidness goes away.... then add a few fishes at a time... no more than 4.. once you have fish in there do a 25% water change every week.....best wishes

try adding nitrifying bacteria such as eco-start & make sure you remove the chlorine from your tapwater with a dechlorination solution... also make sure the filter medium is fresh, (new cartridge or charcoal/ cotton/ sponge medium, depending on the type of filter you have. You may need to buy new gravel for the bottom, if the previuos owners of the tank were not good fish keepers, there could be a buildup of waste in the old gravel. causing the foul odor. good luck!

I would bleach the tank to avoid cross-contamination. It's the only sure-fire way to go, but you must make absolutely sure that it is rinsed entirely free of any bleach.

Activated carbon will help with the smell otherwise. It removes toxins, but not bacteria.

Some of the filters have activated carbon in them. Those should remove the smell.

Use some mild soap and rinse it VERY well! There should be NO soap residue left on the inside of the tank!-- Also, use a wash cloth or something to clean the sides! -- If your tank is small enough (like a 10gal)... and your dishwasher is big enough, run it through there on high-temp setting!-- Just make sure it is COMPLETELY rinsed of all soap! :)
