most cichlids will thrive alone, but once you have them setup alone good luck adding another fish and not having them kill it.
Here are some easy to find species
For a small tank 20-30 gal. You could go with an african cichlid (tons of species with very nice colors but require hard water) or a convict cichlid (lot of personality IMO)
For a 55 Gal. Jack Dempsey, Blue Acara, Texas, Red Devil, Green Terror (be forewanred though some of these fish could potentially outgrow a 55, though it takes a while and alot of them stay on the small side)
Go to you local fish store and look at the cichlids I think theyd be perfect for what you are trying to do.

I think a fish living alone isn't a good idea. I think if a fish has a another fish in it's tank it will live longer. But, if you choose to have a fish live alone (Which I don't is a good idea.) I prefer getting a gold fish or little guppies. My best idea is to get little feeding fish, those don't live long, are cheap, and you can keep buying them whenever one dies. They also are small, you can have more than one in a small tank. They only cost 10 cents. Another good fish to live alone is a Gold Fish. But I do not reccomend it.
I hope I helped you! :-)

Actually, fish do benefit from company. I had my goldfish alone once, and as soon as I bought him a friend it was obvious how much happier he was. He follows his buddy up and down the tank. They are inseperable. So yes, goldfish DO interact with each other and DO benefit from company.

Goldfish. They don't mind at all to be by themselves. But keep in mind depending on what kind of goldfish you get ( and yes there are different kinds) your fish will grow the size of its tank.
Therefore one inch in growth per gallon surrounding. The more stuff or fish you put in the tank the smaller your friend will be.
