I live in a dorm and I want to get a fish for my room because I love animals and I miss having them around and all I can have in my room is a fish. It would be in a bowl and has to be a pretty hardy fish so it can go home with me for holidays (thanksgiving, christmas and spring break) oh and I don't really want a goldfish, I've had those before and want to try something new. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

I was thinking about a beta but I'm not sure if they are hardy enough to go for a 3 hr car ride.

The ONLY fish that can survive in a bowl is a single male betta. However there is a huge difference between surviving and actually thriving. If you are going to have a betta in a bowl it has to be no less then 1 gallon. If it is going to be housed in a 1 gallon bowl it NEEDS to be cleaned weekly. Move the fish to a cup and clean the bowl out with hot water no soap and use dechlorinated tap water or spring water that is the same temperature as what the fish is in. NEVER use distilled. The betta would honestly do better in a heated and filtered 5 gallon tank. They are after all warm water tropical fish.

Since you will be leaving on vacations, i honestly think it would be best for the fish if you waited to get a pet after college. It is extremely stressful to be taken out of its habitat, forced to deal with temperature changes and different water parameters. Stress equals weakened immune system and then sickness like fin rot, ich, fungus, columnaris, dropsy, ect..

Betas are pretty to look at and are very easy to take care and many stores cary many different tanks and plenty of food to feed them but you cant put 2 male betas in a tank because they wound up killing each other. But females can stay together, tip- males are prettier and females arent that as pretty as the males. hope this helps. I am pretty sure a beta could go in a fish bowl there not that big even one would probaly take up any space.

In my dorm tank, I have a school of six Trigonostigma hengeli. They are very beautiful and interesting fish. I am soon going to be using the tank to breed my Tanichthys micagemmae (also an excellent fish for a 10 gallon tank), so I am growing Riccia and Hygrophila difformis in there to provide shelter for the eggs and fry.

There are endless possibilies with your tank, it just depends on how hard you're willing to look for the right fish.

I have a beta at work. On long weekends, I stick him back in his cup and bring him home. They can go a day or 2 with out being fed. I clean his bowl a couple times a month and he's nearly 2 years old. He's funny too. He sees me come in to work and starts fluttering around at me until I feed him, and he chases my finger around the outside of his bowl. He's ornery and gets mad at me when I clean his bowl. He doesn't like the net or being in his tiny little cup...People at work know that he's fiesty and come and look at him and play with hm a little. He's a cheep pet too...I've only had to buy food for him one or two times, and it was about $1.99 for it.

Ditto on the beta. Make sure it's male (flashier than the female).
Just don't put 2 together. They will fight.
They are also known as Siamese Fighting fish.

Get a beta. They're easy to take care of and they're pretty to look at. Pet strores have a variety of small tanks that are decorative as well.

The betta is about one of the hardiest fish around. Go for that. If you can't keep a betta alive then you shouldn't have a pet. You shouldn't be taking any fish around with you on holidays, period. Fish are not a portable pet.
