I'm betting it was a algae eater. There is all different kinds of them. Here is a web site. Just click Images and you can see the different kinds.
Hope I could help you. Good Luck

my vote is for the kuhlii loach or baby niger of sorts or maybe even a ghost.Either way if you have a brand new tanks stay away from all of those until your tank is nice and cycled out well, because they will only die in a matter of days, in one that is not.
They weren't able to tell you what it was? If i were i would run far far away from that store, my lord, imagine what they may try to sell you , just because...Yikes
Have a camera Phone? Snap and send it to me, lets find out what this baby really is?

possibly a khoolie loach, a peacock eel or an eel tailed catfish. Its hard to guess without the colour and thickness of the body.

Like an eel? Ummm....it might be an otto cat. Was it sucking on the side of the tank? Sorry, I'm probably not being very helpful...

Probably a loache. Look em up on your favorite search engine and check. Enjoy your aquarium.

I am not sure what type of fish you seen at that store without a coloring description or other info. But here is a site that may help youfind the one youseek.

They are probably black ghost knife fish. If you hate guppies, get a few. They'll rip those guppies up and eat them.
