I have just come back to the UK from a 2 week holiday. When we were there, we heard that it was record temps in UK (36.5 C to be precise) and I was worried about my tropical fish. I have 2 tanks, both which usually have to be kept at 25 C but because no one was in our house to keep the windows and doors open which would let the tanks cool down a lot, I thought I was going to loose all my fish. Luckily I only lost 2 out of 24 but I am worried about them for when I go out to visit my Nan or something for a whole day, weather they would be ok or not. I can't ask my neighbours to open our doors and windows while we are out because that is just plain irisponsible. Besides, my neighbours out a lot anyway. Please help because I don't want to loose anymore of my fish and I was even thinking of buying some new ones soon because I still have room in one of my tanks. Is it a bad time to buy new fish? Also, I heard you can put ice cubes in tanks. Is this true? Do you have to mix special water?

I cannot run an airline outside because the entire complex will be tented. It is a very well established and heavily planted freshwater aquarium and I must be out of the apartment for 2 and a half full days.

Are there any other options?

i know when you perform a water change, you are supposed to let the temp of the water you are adding reach the same temp as the water in the tank. how do you do this?

I have a 2G tank. I've heard to gravel pump it once a week and change 25% of the water, and totally 100% clean the tank once a month.

BUT a gravel pump once a week as some have suggested won't work because the pump cannot be totally submerged in water and won't get suction. So what do I need to do to keep the tank clean?

i recently had two african cichlids in there. one was very territorial (kinda looked like a EBJD), i'm guessing he killed the other cichlid. then this wknd, my boyfriend unplugged the surge strip (thinking of conserving energy and forgot that we switched the aquarium plug to that strip!!!) connected to the tank and the 2nd cichlid passed, but the pleco survive (yay!). i would like to add one or two more fish in the tank if possible... any suggestions? (and yes, i am plugging the aquarium into a separate outlet)

My tank is FILTHY. I used to clean out the filter everyday. My light is on a timer and is not on for more than 8 hours a day. There's just so much algae and junk in there. I've taken out all the live rock before and sifted the sand, but it seems too tedious, but i've seen tanks that just work on their own. i have snails and crabs. any suggestions?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what th average life expectancy of a golden orfe? My dad has fish in ponds and tanks all over the house and garden, we must have over 300 fish! But we were just interested as to how long the golden orfe live for, we have three that are seventeen years old!
