There not bad... it's just they take a lot of maintenance to look after them :D If you cycle the water more than normal, maintain correct aeration, don't overfeed ya fish and take regular ammonium and nitrate tests there's nothing wrong with them. Like someone else said they are very safe for betta's and since betta's are normally kept in vases and other horrible tanks I see the fish bowl as a savior for the betta’s. As for keeping goldfish I do believe they aren’t suited to bowls because of the high amount of waste they produce. But I also believe pet shops do not intentionally sell goldfish with fishbowls, for example my local pet shop sells fishbowls, and I have never seen them telling a new goldfish owner to buy a fish bowl but instead I have seen them directing first time fish keepers who want to own goldfish to more suitable tanks and aquariums. So before you judge the pet shop owners remember that there are good pet shops and bad ones, the good ones think about their reputation as responsible fish owners before profit and the bad ones; profit before reputation.

They sell bowls because of the fact human beings purchase them and that they only choose your cash. this is like asking why do shops cellular cigarettes. as long because it makes funds, why no longer? 2d, I hate to break this to you yet your information is misguided. someone-friendly goldfish desires seventy 5 gallons for itself! Your "feeder fish" is a comet. Comets can truthfully attain 12 inches in length, and a few may even precise 18 inches! additionally, there is little need retaining fish in small bowls while they're small. Goldfish do maximum of their growing to be interior the 1st year of their lives. So in case you chop back their swimming area now, they'll probable go through stunted strengthen and different problems. Fish choose 3 issues to correct improve: Aeration, area, and food. Bowls are actually not properly aerated. and that they don't have sufficient space. you may grant the fish meals yet that on my own does no longer be sufficient for it to enhance and stay its finished existence. Your comet can stay 20-30, even 40 years! in case you have a 20 gallon tank, you may shop a single fancy goldfish in it. yet no longer someone-friendly. Fancy goldfish basically attain approximately 6" in length, as a result a 20 gallon is sufficient for them. even with what goldfish you elect, they choose surprising filtration, double filtration to be proper. ability in case you have a million fancy in a 20 gallon make sure the clear out is rated at 40 gallons. And an rather final word, don't be scared with regard to the reality which you have become a huge tank. they're lots less complicated to look after than small tanks. think of roughly it. A a million inch fish in a bowl, or the comparable a million inch fish in a seventy 5 gallon. he's safer interior the seventy 5 gallon because of the fact the waste he produces heavily isn't waiting to rapidly harm him, because of the fact there is a lot water around him!

Because they know people are stupid and impulsive enough to buy them.

It's not their job to educate the public about their pets. It's their job to sell as much of their crap as they can to ignorant people.

You ever go into your local pet store with a legitimate question? You ever notice how some of them flounder at the answer? I once had a guy tell me that I couldn't put my silver dollars in with my neon tetras - they're primarily herbivorous fish, for cryin' out loud. This same guy then tried to sell me "Betta Water" - bottled water for my fish. I told him I had a 55-gallon tank, and he said, "That's ok. We have enough water here to fill that thing!" at which point I told him how unhealthy it is to put your fish in bottled water. He then told me I didn't know what I was talking about.

At that point, I left.

EDIT: People. NO FISH BELONGS IN A BOWL. I don't care if bettas were raised in rice-paddies in Thailand. They will live in a bowl, yes, but they will not THRIVE. They will not be happy in water that doesn't get changed often enough so that they end up living in their own fecal matter all the time.

If you can't afford a decent tank and filter, don't bother getting fish.

I think its because they dont care.

You can always tell a good pet store from the way they treat the pets. They will never sell you a "goldfish" bowl and tell you that you can keep goldfish in it.

A good pet store, in fact any store, is one that ADVISES their customers WELL.

Petstores sells them because there is still a demand for them. As long as there are inexperienced fishkeepers (who are not knowledgeable in fish maintenance), there will be demand for relatively nice and cheap looking fishbowl (geat view and placeability) and cheap (but colorful) goldfish to go with it.

If all gold fish all costs a hundred bucks each, I can assure you there will be a drop in sales of those bowls.

It can be used to keep goldfish. Remember the bigger the tank capacity the easier it is to maintain. We have to replace the water 30% every two days to make the water chemical safe for fish.

cause kids like them and parents would rather get them a cheap goldfish bowl than buy an aquarium especially if they are like my kids that go through pet phases

Because they make money selling them.

It isn't private businesses' problem to do the right thing, although some do. Their thing is making a profit. Taking care of people and the environment is what the government is for.
