No!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely NOT.

NO NO NO NO

Though i'm sure a fancy would be much better than a common, anything in that bowl is going to suffer. The fancy you are talking about is usually given 10-15 gallons per fish, with a large super oversized filter, a large tank, (50 gal min), that has lots of surface area for oxygen exchange, huge weekly water changes.

Unfortunatly, a 1 gal bowl is very bad. Most anything will not live there for long. It offers no filtration, no heating, little or no oxygen, no room for area, and no versiltility. That bowl is good for one of the most tortured animals on earth, the betta. It is sluggish and can breath some air directly from the surface, but would you like living in a closet all your life?

That 1 gal bowl, really is not useful in terms of fishkeeping, though as a vase or a jar of potpurri, there is great potential

If you really want fish, or that fantail, a nice 29 gal tank is not too huge, still offers a nice size, and is great for 2 fancies. You however will need to filter, dechlorinate, and cycle it first. These 2 sites will provide tons of info http://www.fishforums.net/

Oh, and Rome really has made goldfish bowls illegal, as they have better animal creulty prevention than us

No. Goldfish need a much bigger tank and good filtration. Some people will say a 10 gal is ok. I agree it's better than a fish bowl but realistically they should have at least 30 gal for one fish and an additional 10 to 20 gal for each addition glodfish. This is most important to standard Goldfish. A 10 gal tank would be the very very minimum for one fantail goldfish. Goldfish produce quite a bit of waste even when you don't overfeed them. It's very important to keep up on water changes and not overfeed. They also need plenty of airation as well.
You do not need a heater for a goldfish. They prefer cool water about 70 to 75 degrees. You do however need very good filtration due to, as stated before, the amount of waste they produce.
As said by others, a Betta would be best for a bowl like that. They don't need a heater, filter, or airation. They have a special organ in the top of their head called a laberynth that allows them to gulp air from the surface. What is important is that they have a good amount of surface space at the top of the water and that you do not overfeed them. One male Betta per bowl. Do not put a female in with it wither as the male will usually kill the female. Change the water about once a week and use a good water dechlorinator.

Like other answerer's have said already, goldfish are messy. They produce a lot of waste, so it would be impossible to keep that size tank clean and toxin free with a goldfish in it.

Second, goldfish need aerated water. If the bowl does not have a air stone or something similar in it, it will effectively suffocate.

Third, the one inch per gallon rule applies only to the ADULT size of the fish. Your one inch goldfish has the potential of growing 12 inches or more. Even considering the fact that goldfish are one of the few species of fish that are fairly limited by their space, they will still grow far too big for that bowl.

Your best bet is a Betta. They do fairly well in a bowl that size, and have adapted to take in their oxygen from the surface through special organs, so do not need the aerated water. Remember, only 1 male Betta per tank.

Hope this helped.

No it is not, I am going to copy and paste my reply to your other question that you asked about your poor fantail goldfish gasping for air. Maybe then you will get it through your thick head that goldfish CANNOT live in bowls.
Goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons PER baby/juvenile fat fancy goldfish, and a minimum of 20 gallons PER baby/juvenile commet/common/shubunkin goldfish. Adults need a minimum of 50 gallons PER goldfish. Goldfish excrete ALOT of ammonia and need heavy filtration.

You claim to love this fish, yet you are torturing it to death by keeping it in a bowl. Find the fish a new home, return it to the petstore or find someone with a pond and DONOT get another goldfish.
It is gasping for air because it is SUFFOCATING. Goldfish have primitive gills and require a high amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. That can only be acclomplished in a large rectangular tank with heavy filtration and air stones.
The larger the tank, the more surface area there is to allow more gas exchange. You cannot get that in a bowl, plus fantail goldfish grow to be 10-12 inches. They DONOT grow to the size of the container they are kept in. They also have a 20-30 year lifespan, having him only live a week to a month in a horrible bowl is animal cruelty.

The only fish that can survive in a bowl is a single male betta. But honestly, bowls are for candy or flowers, NOT fish.
There is a difference between surviving and actualy thriving. Bettas thrive in filtered and heated tanks of atleast 5 gallons.

Goldfish can't live in a 1 gallon fish bowl, esp. fantails and other fancy goldfish.
They need a heater and filter and other things to be healthy and to live a long life.
Fancy goldfish are not that hardy, they can't handle temps. lower than 40/50 for long periods, or any temps. more that 85 for long periods.
However if you have a common or feeder, then they might be able to live in a bowl, but not for a long time.

Usually a good rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water per fish. If you have a 10 gallon tank, I would'nt put more than 10 small to medium fish. But a 1 gallon tank for a goldfish is fine, provided he doesnt get to large.

To have a healthy gold fish you need at least ten gallons per fish. Try a Betta fish, it will be very happy in a one gallon. Try www.goldfishparadice.com. I have three fish That I've kept in a thirty gallon for five years. They are big and healthy. I just got a 65 gallon and now they are even healthier. people who claim a goldfish can be kept in a one gallon do not know what they are talking about. Go to pet-co, or pets mart. The ammonia the fish produce through their gills and excrement is too much for proper maintenance.

Rome has made Goldfish bowls illegal. No kidding- it is a clear cut case of animal abuse. They would be illegal in many other places except for some reason people don't see fish as living creatures that deserve our respect.

If you feel the compulsion to take on the responsibility of another life then do it the courtesy of a little research.

These are links to articles explaining the reasons fish should not be kept in bowls. Lots of fish still are- mostly out of ignorance, people just haven't taken the time to learn. You can not claim ignorance- here is the information. If you still keep that goldfish in a bowl then it is out of cruelty. Why buy a life simply to destroy it?

There are a number of great web sites for proper Goldfish care. If you give your baby plenty of room to grow then he may be with you up to 40 years. Enjoy your new friend!

Your goldfish won't live that long in a bowl. Goldfish, like all fish except betta fish, have to breathe air from the water.

Water in a bowl doesn't get any new oxgygen, that's why there are filters in fish tanks, to clean and aerate the water. You would have to change the water almost every day to keep it breathing healthy.

Get a betta fish. He breathes air from the air, and so his water can be clean but lacking oxygen, and he will still live.

no, while fancy goldfish grow smalleer than koi and feeder fish, still i have raised fan tails over 12 inches. so 12 inches of fish in a gallon bowl = bad thing

goldfish are messy, so poor water quality is going to occur, high ammonia levels. Will lead to the down fall of this bowl.
