try a pleco. their the black spotted 1s that stick on the side of the tank and clean it so u wont have to clean it as much. a gold fish is good but they r extremely dirty fish. u would have to clean the tank a lot.

Mostly depends on your tank, please dont try fit a species just for the sake for your child :)
If you are starting new, i recommend few goldfish (small ones), Platies, fantails for first month (i guess you just bought a new tank). These fishes are hardy and forgiving for mistakes done by begineers so you wont lose them overnight, also they help start the nitrogen cycle within your tank. After a month, you can go for fancier ones.. once your tank cycle is over and you have learnt the way of managing fishes.

We have goldfish. The kids do okay with them. (My kids are 3 and 18 months) I guess it depends on the child, some fish are really hard to take care of. I let the 3 year old feed them, but all of the tank maintenance I do myself. If the child is old enough and responcible enough get something nicer, we had a Beta but it was too hard for him to take care of and we lost it...

As far as a beginner fish, I would go with a betta. Goldfish require 30 gallon tanks. Check out www.liveaquaria.com for selections of fish that require at least 10 gallon tanks.

Beta. everybody says goldfish are the best but they are not! The 3 I have had and all the ones my friends have had all died within a few months of getting them. and the are one of the dirtiest fish you can get, but if you are willing to clean the tank out every two or three days they sure, but I would say a beta!

A goldfish...but don't put it in one of round tanks, use a square one because the fish will live longer.

i would go with a gold fish or some sort of a barb 9tiger barb) these fish are easy to take care, inexpensive and are tolerent of sub optimal water conditions

A very cheap one with no distinguishing markings, if you know what I mean. The inevitable will happen, and as long as it isn't witnessed outright, you can make the switch on the sly and never a tear will be shed.
