We just got a 4 month old Boston Terrier pup, and we noticed that her ears were a little red, she also had a few small red dots on her tummy. We took her to her vet check appt. and the vet confirmed that the ears have a bacteria/yeast infection in them and we were perscribed an ointment for them. Also an antibiotic to take orally. Her belly is breaking out a lot worse and the vet is closed until Friday. She is bitiing her legs and feet and scratching her belly like mad. She is so red on her poor little tummy and arm pits and her eyes are red where the whites are. =( Any ideas on what it is? Is the antibiotics going to treat the rash as well as the ears? I wasn't sure if that was going to work since she only had a couple of spots and the vet perscribed them to help her ears. Any tips to get her through until Friday? Thanks!

Could she be carried off by a bird (hawk & eagles)?

Everyone knows dogs have super-sensitive noses and can track scents for miles. But how to they know which direction to travel? If a bloodhound is searching for someone, why doesn't it start travelling in the opposite direction 50% of the time, still following the trail, but moving towards the person's starting point? Does scent have some sort of directional indicators that say "person approached from this direction and travelled in this direction"? Does it have to do with the strength of the scent (weaker = older)? You wouldn't think the strength of a scent would be much different from one spot to a point a few feet away, but dogs do have exceptional noses. If anyone out there has a scientific answer, I'd love to hear it.

Now, my holidays are not until next year (April) but I'm already stressing about it so I'd like to hear your advise. We adopted our dog from the pound about 4 months ago. She is an australian cattle dog and was dumped by their previous owners after 7 years. She was very stressed at the pound (obviously) and is quite scared and defensive towards other dogs (but not plain aggressive though). I have two options. The first one is a company (in Australia) called Don't fret pet and basically it's families (without other dogs) who look after your dog whilst you're on holidays. The other option is the normal boarding kennel. Now money is not an issue and I'm willing to spend whatever it takes so that she does not suffer during those two weeks. The first option sounds good but I'm concerned the people (even though theyhave police checks etc) might not treat her properly and I would never know about it. The kennel I'm looking at has a good reputation but I know it will stress her heaps. Advice?

many people say that pedigree is bad for dogs, but I am a little confused because I have been giving our fifteen month old mini doxie who we have had for only a couple of weeks pedigree and she seems to love it and is healthy, happy has a shiny coat and the vet said is in spectacular condition. What should I do keep her on it or switch?

My dogs are on AvoDerm and they are doing great on it. Their coats are shiny and their poop is solid. However, several people on this site have said bad things about this dogs food. What is the truth? Are avocados really toxic to dogs? My dogs love it, and this food was recommended, but no one on this site seems to like it at all!

Getting another dog. "Resident" dog is female, shihtzu mix, 18 mos old, spayed. "New " dog female, shih tzu, one year, not spayed.

All the "how to introduce dogs" articles I've read have "resident dog in neutral area....another person bring 'new' dog up..."

Problem? I'm single, no kids and getting the dog this weekend while all my family and friends are of town! So how do I do this 'alone' and successfully?

All suggestions appreciated.

We have a miniature Daschund who is a purebred with papers and is 15 months old, we have only had her for a few weeks and we are new to owning a dog, we feed her pedigree dry food during the day and some fresh mince or a chicken neck at night. The dog food says it has all these nutrients and stuff but is it better to make her food?

Now I have YET to get this dog. Expecting to get dog in a few days.

This is a shih-tzu, female, one years old, not yet fixed.

The current owner has stated that this girl is a major 'lovebug' and all around great except one thing: She is 'housebroken' but owner states that when she leaves the room the dog pees. The owner states that "it is as if it's a 'control' thing." Current owner has had dog for 3 months. She said as long as dog is around her dog is fine, no problems.

Is this possibly a control issue?

How do we correctly and consistently address this problem when the dog comes into our home?

Thank you.

My 6 month old black lab puppy went in for her spay surgury over a week ago. A few days ago I noticed her belly was quite swollen so I took her immediately to get it looked at. He took a syringe full of liquid from her stomach and sent us on our way and said that everything should get better but he wanted to wait 5 more days before removing the sutures. The next day everythig went from bad to extremly worse. The next morning I took her back and he scheduled her for emergency surgury that morning. When I went to pick her up he said the stitches on the subcataneous layer had broken. He said the cause could be from over activeness. Needless to say, after he fixed what had gone wrong yesterday (as he re-opened her and re-stitched her) things are getting real bad again. Shes swelling again and I dont know what to do. I am worried sick. PLEASE HELP.

I have always liked the Basenji and was wondering if anybody has had one.....do they have special requirements? Do they make good pets? Anything I should know about them if I'm considering buying one... I've looked around and found a breeder that I think is ok....I'm not sure how to tell if they're "responsible"....how do I tell?

Monday night my AKC registered Golden Retriever busted out of my backyard nad when we were chasing him down, a big old truck came speeding down our street and hit him. He flew like 30 feet and landed on the street, we rushed him to the emergency vet and they tried to save him, but they said that he had to much internal damage and he bleed out. The person that hit him didn't even stop. They speed up and kept right on going. Well, today I saw them at the gas station and they had a HUGE dent in their front bumper with my dog's blood still there! Is there anything that can be done? I have tried calling the police, but they keep transfering me here and there. I was just wondering if anybody knew the road I should take? I got out and confronted them, but of course they denied it. I know it was them! I started taking pictures of their truck, and they turned their bright lights on so I couldn't get a picture of the dent with all the blood!
