Getting another dog. "Resident" dog is female, shihtzu mix, 18 mos old, spayed. "New " dog female, shih tzu, one year, not spayed.

All the "how to introduce dogs" articles I've read have "resident dog in neutral area....another person bring 'new' dog up..."

Problem? I'm single, no kids and getting the dog this weekend while all my family and friends are of town! So how do I do this 'alone' and successfully?

All suggestions appreciated.

Where are you getting the newcomer from?
Bring the resident dog with you. If they are reputable, they'll help you introduce them.

If not:
Put them both on leashes.

Tie the newcomer to something and let the resident approach.

BEWARE!
Females can take an instant, and life long, dislike to each other.

I introduced my second dog to the older dog outside. I put the older dog outside in the yard and restrained him on a six-foot leash. I put the new puppy in the yard and supervised them while they played and got to know each other. I did this for over an hour. Then I brought both dogs into the house. My older dog proceeded to pound on the puppy with his right paw about ten times, and then they ran off together and they've been inseparable ever since. That was two years ago. Both of my dogs are males, and the adult dog was neutered when I got the new puppy. The dogs should get along if your older dog recognizes and respects you as the leader of the pack. There should be no power struggle if you're the leader because the new puppy will naturally accept and assume her position at the bottom of the totem pole.

Meet them down at the end of the block. Don`t introduce in your home. Someone is dropping the dog off, if not you have to be picking it up, so take your dog with you when you go, have a seatbelt or crate for one while you drive.

To be honest I've always heard that males are the worst! We have 3 dogs currently (2 males, 1 female) whenever we got our 3rd he was male & the male that we had already owned HATED him! He growled everytime he walked by... we acutally let him get used to him before we forced them together! It seemed to be very natural actually... don't force the relationship to work! But generally I do think that females accept change easier! Best of luck to you though.
