Brush him! Beagles have very deceiving looks. People look at one and think "hmm, small size means not much exercise needed; short coat means low grooming requirements". That couldn't be farther from the truth.

Beagles have double-coats, meaning they shed a lot. Get hold of a grooming brush - the Furminator is a good one - and brush him down about twice a week. You would be very surprised at how much loose fur gets out from under his coat. Just brush thoroughly about twice a week, and clear out all the loose fur that comes out - this way you can avoid getting the fur on your carpet and your couch.

However, if your beagle has been shedding so much to the point that you are starting to see bare patches, or if he is scratching a lot or licking/chewing his paws in accompaniment to the excessive shedding, you should take him to the vet.

Yes, they shed, but if you keep up with brushing you'll have less of a problem. A Beagle be a great companion for your 13 year old, they are wonderful dogs. All the best;^)

Nothing is wrong with a dog shedding to much &+ a way to stop it is go outside even though its cold go outside and take some time and brush it or go in the bathroom and wash them so they can get clean and shed a lot of that hair off.

First brush your buddy daily. That should cut down on the amount that he sheds on the carpet. But your dog shouldn't be shedding in the middle of the winters, that's when the shedding slows down.
