Why do some dogs eat there own poo?

So why do some dogs eat there own poo? our new pup eats his own poo every now & then, does anyone know why they do it.

I've heard the theory that Dan up above wrote. Also, I've has vets tell me they do that because they lack certain minerals in their system.

Called Dog Coprophagia:
A dog with a physical problem that causes excessive hunger, pain, or other sensations.
A dog who is not getting enough to eat or is going too long between meals.
A dog with intestinal parasites or other condition that creates blood or other fecal changes .
Some dogs develop a mental connection that they will be punished if their humans find them in the same room with feces.
Boredom.
Separation anxiety.
The number-one thing you can do to help overcome feces eating is to keep your dog's area clean of feces.
This means housetraining, and supervising the dog whenever the dog is in the designated relief area.

My dog does this every now and then, most people say it's lack of nutrients. I spoke to my vet and said it was just bad manners. I'm giving my dog "Potty Mouth" tablets 1 daily depending on the weight, and it seems to be working.The tablet leaves the poop tasting bitter. You can find this tablets at the pet stores. Now that my dog has the tablets in his system he attempted to eat his poop but made a "disgusting" look on his face and since then he wont even think about eating poop! Good Luck.

In addition: For those that say this is called Coprophagia, you are wrong. This is just a HABIT...COPROPHAGIA is the disease dogs can get from eating their poop!

Puppies eat all sorts of disgusting things, but if older dogs are eating their own poo, it means they arent getting fed properly.

My vet told me either they could be missing something in their diet that they're trying to get from the poo.

But, and this is gross, she also said if they really like their food, they will eat the poo because it tastes like their food!

It is called coprophagia.
Stop him now, or it will develop into a life-long habit.
There is a product available in pet stores and catalogs that you feed to them that makes eating poop unappetizing.
But, if you clean up after him immediately there wouldn't be a problem, would there?
